An injected 2.0 gets twice as far on a tank as a carbed 1.7. that needs a valve adjustment.
A carbed 1.7 is no better than a 67 vette being driven carefully. M |

i had a 1,7 and it was quick enough when driven well. the displacement is down a bit but it also had the highest compression out of the box of any 914. as a result of its "orphan stepchild" status they are often available at relative discount prices.
and you can always go bigger - or 6 - or V8 - or whatever - later. and they can be very efficient. if you have a lot of distance driving to do - well - it's $2/gal pretty much everywhere, and it all adds up ... |

A running 1.7 with FI gets about 30+ mpg and has about 80hp. If Miles is driving it gets about 15 mpg.
A good running 2.0L with FI gets about 25+ mpg and has about 95hp. If Miles is driving it gets about 5mpg. Geoff (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving-girl.gif) |

yeah i was looking at engine prices....they are runnign fairly cheap. my tired 2.0 for a new 1.7 sounds like a good deal....and i could just adjust my MPS and get a new computer, or just keep all my 2.0 stuff and buy a computer and MPS caibrated for 1.7

I am going to have a 1.7 FI for sale soon. Rebuilt top end by a local Porsche shop. Doesn't even have 300 miles on it yet. Super clean. You get brain, fires up and runs like new. $300 it's yours. Sorry for the plug. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/slap.gif) |

i just have to find a way to get that to me.....a 1.7 that runs very well is WAY better than a 2.0 that runs so-so. i'm tired of worrying. I just want to get in and drive. You know? Just my opinion

Yeah, if you don't buy that, I will, and raise the price when you do want it.

I have a 1.7...
It runs great, it is a tank of a motor... Think about it....the heads have the most meat (no cracks) The cylinders have the thickest walls.... I love the motor, and when i replace it with a 2.4 I will miss it...it starts every time, burns about 1 quart a year...no drips (I fixed all of them) Other than that...I can have alot of fun daily driving it and never ever worry about the motor.... There is a guy here in MA that turbos 1.7 liter motors....never even open them up....whn they die, he just put another one in....they are cheap and simple, plenty of power to have alot of fun..... Just take a 72 VW bus for a ride....then take the 914 for a ride....the 914 1.7 will seem like light speed compared to the bus Rich |

I have a 1.7L (as one can see below).
It is a gas sipper without a doubt. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif) My odometer does not work, my speedometer does not work but the"low fuel idiot light" operates. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mueba.gif) On the "backroads" I like to drive here in Arizona, one can easily find themselves 100 miles from the nearest gas station, so I do have a good idea of my fuel usage. That "idiot light" would not help much so far out into the desert here. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/stones.gif) That being said (well, typed, really), one can get 30 miles to the gallon without even trying, 35 mpg on the interstate if it is fairly flat, although I avoid interstate highways whenever possible (["all you see on the interstate is interstate"] from the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles). (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/slap.gif) I believe the "low power" of the 1.7L has made me, perhaps, a better driver. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif) One must be in the correct gear at the correct time to use the "power band" of this "little" motor. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) I just saw an ad for a new (read here expensive) "hybrid" car touting "THIRTY MILES TO THE GALLON, CITY". Not really a "breakthrough", I think. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) John |

Do it.. it's nice having an engine that won't overheat and just keeps running. There's enough power there. As far as I know the computers are different. Don't mess with your MPS, adjusting those never works out and 1.7 ones can be had cheap. check part numbers and make sure all your FI parts are compatible. Oh, injectors are different too.

the 1,7 is anemic. Slits told me it's got the best compression out of all years (stock) but least displacement. It should be fine if you know how to shift (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) Hell, even my 1,8 can scoot if you drive it right. I don't see why the same can't be said for a 1,7. Just don't go with dual 40 or 44 IDFs if it's got a stock (FI) cam in there.
