Saturday qualifying was dry in the morning and wet in the afternoon. Erik turned a 2:15.3 for a 7th place grid position, with 5 EP cars ahead of him including last year's 5th place Runoffs finisher (240Z) and a past Runoffs champion (Lotus Super 7). Les Handly started 10th overall for the FP pole with a time of 2:17.7. Chris was 29th on the grid with a time of 2:26.7, good for 7th in class. Ed started 45th overall and 13th in class after a best qualifying lap of 2:37.1. The pole winner driving an EP Honda Prelude broke his engine in the morning warmup. 57 cars took the green flag under sunny skies and warm temperature. Before long Erik was chasing the 240Z and the Lotus for the overall lead. The Lotus spun and when the 240's tires began to fade Erik made his move, taking over the lead on lap 9. The checkered flag came out on lap 12, 2 laps early, due to a crashed car in the "toe of the boot". Les led the FP race until Marc Cefalo, driving a Miata, took advantage of a lapped car situation and assumed the lead. Chris had a good race, passing two FP cars that out-qualified him. Unfortunately two other FP cars that started behind him were much faster and had no trouble motoring by early in the race. Those two cars went on to finish 1st and 3rd in class. Chris' fastest race lap was a 2:23.5 and he finished 7th in class, 23rd overall. Ed did a good job in the race finishing 5 spots higher than he qualified overall, with a best time of 2:33.9. Unfortunately he only finished 10th in class so he came home with no additional points towards earning a Runoffs berth. |
