All aluminum, good power and reliable....pretty cheap as well since about the only market for them is for replacements or sandrails.
A few sites with some good reading about them: C and G Performance and Funco sandrails I know Kennedy Engineering makes an adapter plate and flywheel for it as well and unlike most Honda 4 bangers, they turn the correct direction (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) (IMG:http://www.cgperformance.com/images/CG%20honda%20engine%20WP.jpg) |

On the Honda electronics, You will have to do some work. The OBD0 cars have the VSS located in the cluster. When you convert the car you just pull this signal from teh cluster instead of the tranny. With a OBD0 car you can chip the 89 and later computers and use some aftermarket software, that is free. It sorta works, but it has issues that haven't been overcome. I used one for awhile and found it too unreliable. Plus I hate having to burn chips and go back in the shop to do the burning. I had a setup that was semi portable but you had to stop the car and turn it off to make it change the chip. I am now using the Hondata S300 which is a realtime programmable system that is integrated into the stock computer.
With the S300 you can do just about everything you can with the AEM Plug and Play standalone system for about 600$. My AEM wideband gauge will talk directly to the computer for a full blown on the fly wideband datalogging and Lamba overlay. It also has outputs for Nitrous, extra boost controllers, etc. It will accept anysize injectors, 11K revlimits, 60lbs of boost, etc. So far I am happy with it. With OBD1 you have to generate a VSS signal and you will have to figure out how to activate the Vtec solenoid. On the OBD1 cars a drive in the tranny generates the electronic signal for the speedo and VSS. The Toyota 22R series are getting really expensive right now. For some reason junkyards are really proud of them. I am to the point that carbs suck and dealing with early Japanese carbs is even worse. Any of the later engines could work. You are probably better off going with a true standalone for a conversion because of the issues with some sensors. It will be easier when you don't have to rely on them or can turn them off all together. Swapping Honda engines is easy because of the compatable wiring. Swapping the Factory ECU into another car may be possible but you may have a pretty tough time. You could generate the VSS signal but you would have to run the drive from the tranny. Don't know how hard it would be to integrate into a 901 tranny. AEM offers a bunch of Plug and Play ECU combinations. There may be a unit out there that will plug into your factory harness. Its worth checking on. |
