There has been a lot of talk recently about affordable engine upgrades for the 914, namely larger displacement Type IV engines and Subaru conversions.
It looks as though a Type IV with 125 HP will cost about $5000 to do. It also looks like a Subaru conversion, using the Renegade kit (or a DIY conversion) will run somewhere around the same price for 165-180 HP (or more with a turbo engine). So the poll question is if you had $5000 to spend on an upgrade for your 914, would you rather have a Type IV or a Subaru conversion? As far as I know, no one yet offers a complete drop-in solution for the Subaru conversion, whereas a Type IV can be purchased and dropped in with little effort. -Tony |

I just re-read what i wrote, and dont want to come off sounding like i hate the type 4 , or think that McMarks deal isn't a killer, or any of that.
If you actually plan on racing the car (not DE's), showing the car, or insist on every single part of your 914 be porsche, then the Suby is not for you. I'm not one of those people, I'll run PCA, POC, Nasa etc DE's, I'll Auto cross, and end up running w/ the big dogs (TTOD is TTOD (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/lol2.gif)). I'll drive my car as opposed to rubbing it w/ a diaper. And believe it or not, it will have comfortable, supportive seats, a working heater, and a nice stereo. As far as type 4's go, McMark has the best deal going, There are only 2 other options, the CASOB build it yourself (3 or 4 times maybe) 70HP way.... and the Big dollar Raby way. I'm gonna get to bed, i have to adjust the valves on this car for the last time ever. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smoke.gif) |
