There has been a lot of talk recently about affordable engine upgrades for the 914, namely larger displacement Type IV engines and Subaru conversions.
It looks as though a Type IV with 125 HP will cost about $5000 to do. It also looks like a Subaru conversion, using the Renegade kit (or a DIY conversion) will run somewhere around the same price for 165-180 HP (or more with a turbo engine). So the poll question is if you had $5000 to spend on an upgrade for your 914, would you rather have a Type IV or a Subaru conversion? As far as I know, no one yet offers a complete drop-in solution for the Subaru conversion, whereas a Type IV can be purchased and dropped in with little effort. -Tony |

My big-power type 4 was right at $5k so far. And I still wasn't done spending! Still had a few hundred dollars in head work and balancing the internals. The $5k deal McMark is offering is an incredible deal. But if you want to bring up the "Well for that much I could..." comments then hey, maybe you should. We shouldn't be limited to the Type 4 as our main powerplant. Granted, you need it to be in some competitions. But when you get down to it, most guys who are looking for something beyond the Type 4 and a Porsche 6 are looking for fun. Maybe these sport car club organizations should allow conversions -- and class them accordingly. In my local PCA they're a "Run what ya brung" group -- why should anyone miss out?
I'm rambling... Anyways, for what I've spent on my badass Type 4 engine... I'm letting it go and realizing I will not get the power I want. So, turbo scoob is in my future plans. I had already planned on punching some holes in the front trunk for an oil cooler -- no tears shed over that. But with a turbo scoob I'll have all the fun I expect. |
