Carbs on a completely stock 2.0L, does it work

With a totally stock 2L engine including ignition, cam etc do carbs work effectively? More noticeable power? Drivability? MPG? Worth the hassle? let the games begin! That car would bark the tires in 2nd gear, so it seemed pretty stout. Tom
