There has been a lot of talk recently about affordable engine upgrades for the 914, namely larger displacement Type IV engines and Subaru conversions.
It looks as though a Type IV with 125 HP will cost about $5000 to do. It also looks like a Subaru conversion, using the Renegade kit (or a DIY conversion) will run somewhere around the same price for 165-180 HP (or more with a turbo engine). So the poll question is if you had $5000 to spend on an upgrade for your 914, would you rather have a Type IV or a Subaru conversion? As far as I know, no one yet offers a complete drop-in solution for the Subaru conversion, whereas a Type IV can be purchased and dropped in with little effort. -Tony |

I believe that its a choice thats largely impacted by what you believe in... 95% of my customers that want to work with the TIV as a foundation do so because its the original engine for the car, requires no conversion and can be done completely in a weekend (engine install). Most of these people have a VW/ Aircooled heritage and own a 914 because it handles great and uses the aircooled engine while maintaining simplicity..

Most of these people have a VW/ Aircooled heritage and own a 914 because it handles great and uses the aircooled engine while maintaining simplicity.. Yeah, well my aircooled heritage dates from the mid-sixties, and would observe that a 914 handles just as great with more horsepower. Aren't you in favor of more horsepower, Jake? And if simplicity is really important then owning the car actually becomes simpler with a more modern engine. Look, as much as it pains me to admit it as I've gotten older I've just gotten tired of adjusting valves, setting points, and balancing carbs on a road car. It seems so pointless (pun intended). With either engine the car has the same character while being driven, is just more fun with more horsepower. So given a choice I'd really rather spend my weekends driving with 100 extra horsepower than tinkering with 100 less. So I guess I'm choosing fun over originality. Dave's absolutely right, you do what you want, for your own reasons. The car is great either way, so there's no "wrong" choice. |
