Morning,
Has anyone put sealed gel cell battery in? Are there any (even "full race") that would be direct bolt in replacment? I am welding in my new battery tray tonight and want it to stay new.

Any idea which one fits, has correct (or close AMPs)?

How about pricing?

I have a red-top Optima in my Jeep, the 914 will get one too when I start messing with the motor, I've heard good things about the Odyssey batteries too but I haven't used one.

My optima is 7 years old, still cranks every time, even after sitting for months on end, it's has never had an issue with the 400amp draw of the winch, and still worked and didn't leak while upside-down, sadly it was still securely bolted in it's bracket... The Optima's really only come in one size (look closely at the spec sheet) but in three flavors; red-high output, yellow-deep cycle, and blue-marine. I'm not sure of regulations but I've seen them in several different full-race cars - NHRA, SCCA, Redneck roundy-round... I paid $120 for my Optima I think Odysseys are a little cheaper, at least the optimas are pretty easy to find - if your flaps can't get one try a 4x4 shop - they're big with off-roaders (high draw winches and not leaking).

I highly recommend them!

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) My 9 year old Optima from my 914 (while it's under the knife) is now in my truck and still cranking strong.

I got the Orbital (made by Exide) instead of the Optima (made my Interstate). It's the same technology. NAPA parts stores carry them as part number 9934/78. They are a direct bolt in replacement using the stock hold down clamp. Usually run around $110 here in CA, but may be priced differently somewhere else.

Optima batteries are made by Optima (currently a subsidiary of Johnson Controls), Interstate is just a reseller. I stumbled across their factory in Denver a while back.

Sorry to beat a dead horse (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) but what are the spec's on the batteries? 34 series, 78 series, 900 CCA's OR are all red tops the same?

I am going to get one and want to make sure i get the correct one. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) What are the CCA's?

CheersKerry

I've got 9 US125's up front and 11 of the same in the back! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Gives me about 500 cranking amps (@120V!). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/MDB2.gif)

...and no oil leaks! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

I have this one:

Looks like 800 CCA. Data on most of their batteries is on the website.

I have the 34R with reverse terminals. If you don't use the R model you will have to extend your positive terminal. It used to be the orange top model 34 now it is red top 34R. Same 800 cold cranking amps with no side terminals.

we had an Optima "wiggle" loose out of its stock mount in the 911RSA this past weekend. The clamp failed and the battery caught the plastic on FIRE and arced thru the bracke lines... Dino NOT happy!
Not a dig on the battery, but don't trust the lil clamp on you new tray! If you go with the Optima, get the offroad clamp!!

I got a quote from NAPA of $125 for their 9934-78 direct replacement. I asked for better price, they quoted $103. Not as cool as red optima but exact fit without adapters and same tech!
