Huey is a 3.2 stock.
Papa WAS a 3.4 twin plug...now a 3.0 twin plug with much higher compression, and 315 rwhp!!

Bought Huey's 3.2 engine for $4k with harness, Motronic, etc....everything. Didn't expect it to last long, but it's been over 4 years and it starts up perfectly every time...we run autocrosses and hill climbs with it, so he's certainly not babied...

Figure spend $350 plus welding labor for engine mount, $900+/- for 914/6 oil tank, engine tins ($500??), oil cooler up front ($500), oil lines (couple hundred with fittings) labor to figure out how to run the lines, labor to figure out how to wire the engine, etc.

If you can do it all yourself, you're looking at MINIMUM $6k in parts, including the engine. Pay to have it done? yeah, probably $10k or so...

But...I LOVE the 3.2 in Huey...strong, reliable, plenty of power, but not too much... and when/if we ever get Papa back together, he should really be a beast to drive...

plus exhaust
plus muffler
plus tachometer
plus clutch
plus flywheel

if a carbed motor add cables and linkage and turnbuckle

and running 3.2 motors aren't available at those prices really...

I think add it up and its alot closer to 8K minimum for parts

Yeah, you're right. I keep forgetting those things because we did a lot of that a looong, loong time ago....

I have bought 3 different 3.2 motors at between $4000 and $4500 (two others I bought for friends) They ARE out there if you're willing to wait. Some (most) need work, sometimes you get lucky.

FYI, Huey has gone through the whole gamut: 2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 2.7, and 3.2...all were carbed except the 3.2. I prefer FI...much more user friendly for a driver...

Plus accelerator linkage
Plus oil cooler mod
Plus oil external cooler & fans if you run them
Plus a lot of money in shipping all those parts you got great deals on

I cringe every time I see the $4/$5k number thrown out there. Like anything...you can find someone that has done it but it certainly isn't the norm and I can almost assure you that corners were cut. Just my .02 :-)

Oops! Edit - I do see the oil cooler was mentioned but I think $500 is a bit optimistic if you put it up front and have a shroud etc done right.

QUOTE(brant @ Mar 6 2014, 01:11 PM) *

nathan,

currently its hard to find a clean running motor that is better than a core for reasonable prices...

I think? you already have your motor bought at a good price
it be harder to currently find a motor under budget... and over budget to rebuild one.

I'm working on a 2.4E conversion right now with slightly higher compression I honestly think I will have well over 4K into the motor
and another 5K into conversion parts...

I don't want to disclose the outrageous amount of money that went into the 2.0 twin plug race motor
(the head work alone was over 5K, and the total motor build cost was outrageous)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif)

Engines have gone up! I used to buy what were then cores, but actually ran 6 Cylinder Motors for $500. I even found a Bunch of 911 Early Aluminum Cases (my 2.8 T-P is built off the Best One!) for $700 a piece. 3.0 & 3.2 are Great for a 914, but the days of finding someone pulling their good motor out of a Stock 85 to go race it a 3.6 and hand you off the 3.2 for $2000 are gone.

Race Motors are Off the Charts. My 2.8 if done by the Shop would sell for $40,000+
The Carbs are $4,000, the Dizzy is $2500, 12 Wires $550, and we haven't touched the Huge Current Price for the Case, all the Crazy Machine Work, Factory 2.8 P&C (I think they were $8,000).

The 2.5 is what I kept out of the White Race Car Deal I bought & Sold a few months ago. The Deal came from a Charity and the Car & Motor were from seperate Donors - Since they didn't have any connection, I had no problem selling the car without the motor. It's a 2.5 Twin-Plug Race Winning Motor in HSR, built by Franz Blam. It has 35 Race Hours and my Builder told me thats over-due for a Re-Freshening, which will amount to $11k after getting some PMOs & a Dizzy.

I was told to buy the motor last when doing a 6 conversion so you don't have an expensive lump of aluminum sitting in the garage for years. That was before 911 engines started going up. I have never been known to listen to reason but If I had waited, I would have never found a freshly rebuilt 3.2 with some nice upgrades for $4K.

Never pass on a deal. I bought a semi-project 911 with a working 3.0L motor for $6300. Drove it 150 miles home. Sold the car for $2500, kept the motor, sold the tranny for $1000, sold other random parts for another $500 or so.

Got an "expensive lump of aluminum sitting in the garage for years" for $2300!

My initial reaction to this thread is there are a lot more conversions out there than I thought.

So to date we have 66 replies. Then I got a note from Richard Johnson that said he has helped in over 2000 conversions, and you know there are plenty that didn't use his products so there are a lot of conversions out there!

Mine is one of the mythical... I owned my 74 2.0 for probably 10 years. Then I found a work in progress car with a 2.0 6 and 5 lug conversion for sale for $5k. I swapped the engine and all related parts and the 5 lug stuff to my car and sold the other 914, running, for $2200. A couple of years later I found the 3.0 "built" 6 engine for $2k and sold the 2.0 6 for $3500.
Guess you could say "the price was right"! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

I have 3.0L. Did the conversion about 1999 or 2000. Engine was cheap. Now collecting parts for update/rebuild.

OK, so it looks like the big $$$ conversions go to the Porsche 6's. But there are alternatives out there if you want a custom 6. Subi has a couple of sixes (3.0 & 3.3), Ford has several, and the HP/Torque per $$ is impressive.

Attached Image

After much research I went for the more radical 3.2L SHO V6. The motor is stock and rebuilt where needed, and I don't have $500 into it.
  • 220 HP
  • 200 ft.lbs torque
  • 7000 + RPMs
  • Scalable with turbo or supercharger

Its a beast - but should prove to be great fun.
