I know the other cool kids like Ferrari, Maserati, Bugati, and Lambo are all doing SUV's too.

If Porsche didn't produce a SUV they simply would not be around to make sports cars.

They need something sporty with a short bed. Even like a el Camino and more like a Holden Maloo.

Yep...and the 718 (cayman- 4 banger) days are limited. No one is buying them.

I got my 987.....at a bargain price. Now is the time to buy one.

Gotta respectfully disagree. You cannot say Porsche would not be around at all. Lotus is still around, Ducati is still around, and Lambo is still around despite financial distress in their recent and not so recent past.

They might be much smaller or they might be owned by the Chinese but the brand would still have value and sports cars would be produced to some degree.

I don’t deny the fact that SUVs are the rage but I’d also argue that if station wagons become the next big thing that Porsche station wagons = (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif)

Real sports cars only have two seats - I used to have a T shirt from Hershey that had a picture of a 914 and that logo.

I know I’m in the minority . . . And ... I’m a jackass (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve driven both the Cayenne, and Macan. Great handling SUV’s as SUVs go but I gotta tell you at least where I live they are just rolling Chicanes on the highway. I never see them being driven as performance oriented vehicles.

Good point!

I only used Ducati as an example because they have been Bankrupt so many times. I could have used MotoGuzzi - I have one of those. Only motorcycle that left me stranded by the side of the road with my wife none the less. Well...with respect to Andy's post, I never thought I,d own an SUV but we bought one, my wife wanted it I didn.t. Have a Ford F250 and the P car.

After driving in it for the last few months I realized the practicality of them. I agree....they are a chick car. My wife put it this way:

"I don.t have to worry about my dress blowing up when I get into it or it hiking up over my head when I get out of it."

I told her that I didn.t mind so much and she reminded me that it wasn.t me she was worried about.

I quess wether or not Porsche should have produced one or not is kinda a specious argument. They sell tons of them

You know - they said that about our 914s too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

And then about the Boxster/Cayenne ....

And all 3 financially saved Porsche's behind & allowed them to stay in business & profitable!

And two of the 3 were also VW - Porsche joint ventures (if not in name/badging), & the 3rd just shared a mess of parts from the windscreen forward with the "sister" 996/997 911s!

As for the 718 4-banger Boxster/Cayman - Porsche screwed up by not keeping the flat six legacy which built those cars from introduction, & should've instead introduced a sub-Boxster car with their flat-4 at lower weight, lower price point, & different market segment.

They could've called the smaller, lighter 4-banger WBX either a 718, or 550 or 914 Redux, sold it in the $45-60K range just under the Boxster/Cayman, & in competition with but above the Alpha 4S, Fiat 124/Miata, etc. sports cars out today. It would've been a bigger hit, & they'd have been selling 4 sports car models - not losing sales on their former best selling sports cars.

That said - both the Cayenne and Macan are great cars/SUVs that give an option to Porschephiles for a family car/5 seater for business, as well as their towing & off-road abilities.

And they're a relative bargain price-wise - relative to ANY comparably equipped (options & trim levels) 1/2 ton pick-up & SUVs out there by any of the Big 3 or Japan, & still have more towing capability & far better performance, handling, comfort braking & power at less size & weight than any of those vaunted trucks/SUVs!

The latter are marked up price tremendously vs cars, whereas European automakers tend to price their SUVs lower than their comparable car models. No wonder the Big 3 want to stop making sedans & coupes here in the USA!

https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/art...nesday_March_28

Although you'll pay 2x the parts costs for Porsche parts, than for the Japanese & US vehicles when it comes to repairs!

But then I think too logically & businesslike on such matters! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

For fun, have any of you seen this VW Touareg 5.0L V10 TDI vs Chevy Duramax 2500 +/-6.3L Turbo-Diesel pull-off!?

But try to place your bets before watching, as to which you think will win!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvR1OJJgpwI

.

Andy - get your Cayenne & both of you enjoy it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) That was the point of the T-shirt and the logo. To stir up trouble with the 911 crowd that for years denied that 914 was a real Porsche! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

I bought the shirt at Hershey when I was there parting out my original 914 that was totaled by a rear end crash in late 90's.

Someone ought to make that T-shirt again.

When all this is said and done, I do wonder if 50 years from now anyone will care about Porsche SUV's. Probably will be . . . but I suspect to a much lesser degree than the sports cars. Heck, the tractors are hugely collectible so I guess as long as there are Porsche fans, there will be fans of the SUV's. To each his own!.

There was recently a Cayenne at my mechanic's shop. He said it had 150,000 miles and the guy was the original owner and wanted to keep it forever. He told the owner that after 100,000 miles to budget $5000 a year for maintenance. A friend was looking for one, didn't heed my advice, bought it for $10,000. He has put $5000 into it in the first year. They are maintenance hogs and parts aren't cheap. So know that the price you buy it for is more a down payment. Go into it with eyes wide open and you'll be fine.

If Porsche didn't produce a SUV they simply would not be around to make sports cars.

Porsche has a long history of selling whatever they had to reach profitability, remember the Porsche tractor? Or the Industrial engines that were used from everything from Swiss Ski Lifts to barges. Don't poo-poo Porsche for doing what it takes to make a profit.

Little can prepare you for how fun the first Cayenne GTS with a manual gearbox is. Throw is long from 1-2, but after that's it's brilliant...you feel like Rohrl in the trees on a good backroad, having 200% more fun than you should as you heel-toe your way into turns.

Engine sounds amazing, brakes are strong, a ton of grip for what it is, really nice interior (esp the seats). Only big downsides are thirst and running costs due to complexity and weight.

Love these...truly underrated.

I drove a brand new Macan GTS last year and was totally impressed. Thought the Cayenne was even better.

People might say it's a chick car, you certainly have the right to say that. Personally, I love my 2009 Cayenne S. Perfectly suitable as a daily driver, comfy, quick. Gets through any snow I've encountered, and a lot that I went out of my way to encounter.

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/live.staticflickr.com-19709-1556220374.1.jpg)

If you're capable of working on it yourself, maintenance is on-par with any other German luxury vehicle. Not cheap, but workable. It helps that a lot of parts are shared with Audi/VW.

I'd never have it as a main/only vehicle though. Purely in addition to a fun summer car like my 914.

Why - what happened yesterday? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

And then why thank me!? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Reliable Japanese make - then probably best to avoid Nissan, & look at Toyota, Honda & Subie!
