I have a few of these that came out of parts cars. It's the first radial tires I put on my bug in 74. |

I believe these are an exact match. The dog bone pattern is what we were looking for.

My car had the original spare in it when I bought it. I think I may still have it somewhere. It was a Michelin XZX like this:-

What would the closest match to the Dunlop SP57? That was on my car originally but the only tire similar is the Vredestein but not sure if those are any good I’m sure a Michelin would be better ?

I don’t think Pirelli CN 36 ever came as original equipment, but i remember it as THE tire back in the day

If the price doesn't choke you up, the Michelin XAS would be an awesome choice for a 165R/15.

I assume that Canadian delivered cars had the same tires, but just thought I'd ask if anyone knows whether Uniroyal tires may have also been OE in some markets. The spare that came with my car when I bought it in 1985 didn't match the other tires. It's a Uniroyal rallye "180" and I'm attaching a pic below of the tread pattern. I imagine this is not an OE tire but figured I'd ask given the relevance to this thread.

Seriously? One of the very first asymmetrical tread designs. Kinda has '60s and '70s tech written all over it. I remember getting a new set on my '66 911 and thought I was Vic, by-god, Elford. Of course that was 1979... It's probably a generational thing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

HiI think they did fit CN36. I know they were fitted it to other Porsche (912 & 911) from 1968 through the 1970s, and i think into the '80s. I have made a short film about 914 tyres https://youtu.be/Xc5Nx3aqo9k The current Pirelli CN36 is N homologated by Porsche as their recomended tyre. the XAS is a 1965 tyre, also N homologated. there is a back to back tyre test on he CN36 and other tyres in this size at the bottom of this web page https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/classic-ca...orsche/911.html The 165Sr15 XZX Micheln is Brilliant and i would encourage people to fit it to a Beetle but the Pirelli and the XAS are sports car tyres, and have a much more structured carcass. |

Just watched the vid and gave it a like. Thank you for doing this. It's very helpful to actually see the possibilities side by side.
