Per VW: take out all the clearance (no play at all) and then turn the adjusting screw 2 in turns. This puts the lifter within it's operating range to compensate for changes thru the heat cycles. If you have 'good' lifters you will need to let the engine sit for and hour or so after adjusting so the lifters bleed off some oil and let the valves close all the way.

Here is some info...

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/HydraulicLifters.html

Everything i can find on them says 1-2 turns past contact.

Been meaning to adjust mine as well, I have not touched them in the last 30,000+ miles of abuse.

How do you know if you have them... I just put in a '75 "AW" Bus engine in my '70 914 When I went to do the valves there was zero clearance on all them...

You can usually tell when you start the engine cold. clatter then the noise stops once the oil pressure comes up.

Thanks all that responded. I adjusted them but didn't wait for pump down. I'll re-adjust tonight.

(mines a GE bus engine)

aw code is solid lifter 1.8.

I know they are in mine because i requested that my engine builder put them in 10 years ago. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I knew a lot less then and did not want to mess with valve adjustments on my daily driver. 10 years later and i still have yet to touch the adjusters on that motor.

If you have no clue what is in your motor, look further down on that link under "identification". There is a difference in the pushrods used with the hydo lifters. I don't think the AW engine had them from the factory but i am guessing if you have 0 clearance on all your valves and it is not running like crap someone probably put them in.

here is another link with more bus/hydraulic lifter info
