I bought an Optima Yellow Top about a year ago. It was fairly cheap and still works well. I have been fine tuning my stereo system, wich has a totall of about 700 watts at peak performance. My headlights are still dimming on the higher volume. I have capacitorrs installed next to each amp, but the battery is just not big enough.
My yellow top is rated at 870 amps. The kinetik is rated at 1900 amps. My plan was to install the kinetik hc1800 to replace the yellow top, it is the same size and weighs 54lbs, a little bit heavier than the optima. (not much) Then I was going to replace both capacitors with an hc800 mounted next to the amps in the trunk. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) Anybody have experience with 2 battery setup in a 914?? the site http://www.kinetikaudio.com/2009/default.asp |

you need an alternator that can keep up with the max draw that your system is capable of drawing. that is the only way to keep the lights from dimming.
what you pull out needs to be put in. caps don't work, it's a gimmick, the wrong use for a cap. |

Yup, as Messix above posted. I just checked Kinetics web site and they say exactly the same thing in all their battery descriptions. The alternator is the key to keeping the power going. Mean Green alternators are the bomb.

Does Mean-Green make an alternator for a T2/T4 Application?
I can't seem to find one. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) The site does not list that they have one that would fit our application. As my alternator is dying I am looking to a slightly bigger replacement, any suggestions that I can buy? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) |

There are alternators that are sold by a member here that are 100amp units made out of the stock low amp units.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) I just googled it and found a nice 220 amp replacment as opposed to our 55 amp stock. Joe, the higher the wattage of the Alt the more horse power it will drain from your 1.8. You will be going slow listening to tunes. So what you should do is pick an alternator that will slow your car down enough for you to hear the radio but will keep your lights from dimming (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I set the Kinetik in place of the yellow top, WOW. I have not hooked it up yet, still waiting on a few wires, just wanted to check the fit. The rain tray needed a slight modification to close (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
What do you think about placment of the second battery, it is not heavy at all, so I made a tray, and hinged a tray under it for the relay to sit at a 45 angle, that way i dont need to move any wiring. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) Attached image(s) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
