QUOTE(ArtechnikA @ Jul 21 2010, 03:50 PM) *

I stand a better chance of being able to make this event if there's other stuff to do in the area so we can make a weekend of it. So if we come on Saturday for 914-AX activities and general cook-outery, what's there to see and do in the area on Sunday?

There's no way Joy will be on board to stand around and watch an autocross for two days straight...

Well, the area is flat beautiful, and fall is a great time to be up in the mountians. If you are into history, there is a lot of it in the area - particularly civil war. I bet you could get a nice B&B for the weekend, party on Saturday and see the sights on Sunday.

A google search for "Cumberland MD Bed and Breakfast" turned up several alternatives to camping for the non-campers.

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
Take a 3-hour round trip from Cumberland to Frostburg on a Baldwin 1916 steam locomotive. Call for schedule. 301-759-4400,800-872-4650 http://www.wmsr.com/

Hike or Bike the C&O Canal Tow Path. All the way to DC if you wanted to go for a 90 some mile hike... By the way, if you enjoy hiking or biking, the tow path makes an excellent day trip. For the most part it is hard packed dirt, and fairly well maintained. Something I have always enjoyed.

There are also several national and state parks around Cumberland.

in short, if you are worried you won't find somehting to do on a Sunday, don't be worried. There is more then you can do in a weekend.

Well done Bill (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) A couple of questons.

a: without any scca affiliation will we be able to run our cars

b: will a small oil leak ( seep ) pass a tech inspection ?

c: will I be permanently chastised for running a 944 on the track ?

d: do you want us all to fill out the form, or is our response in this thread enough?

Thanks, for all the work (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Hey guys,

I'm a National Road Autocross member and we use SCCA classing. You don't need an SCCA membership.

We'd love to have as many of you come to to this event as possible. We'll make you feel at home.

I'm in the Outer Banks that week but I'm going to try to get back early enough to bring my 3.2 conversion. Hope to see many new faces.

Fred

I know that I will be able to talk to many of you at Matt's party on the 21st.

But, I'll ask here now.

Is anyone from the Baltimore/York/Frederick area heading over Friday afternoon? I am thinking that would be the way to go if you are planning to take part in the AX, and I know I would feel more comfortable making a long trip in my 914 while caravaning. Getting up at 4 am to make the start of the AX Saturday morning does not sound like fun to me.

My current route will take me down PA rt30 to rt 15 into Maryland. From 15 I will pick up 77 to Thurmont and 66s at Smithburg. From there, good ole rt 70 until I hit Hancock, where I will take rt 40 into Cumberland. Drive time will be ~3.5 hours.

I could change my route to go through Baltimore and meet people there for the run out rt 70, or meet up with folks near Plasket's house as we have done at the past.

Or, I could meet with folks an Baltimore, and then merge that group with whoever is meeting in Frederick and all travel out as one larger convoy.

The OTHER option that I have is taking my family out to visit with dear friends in Everett PA, only an hour out from the Cumberland Airport. Doing the AX and party, and driving back to Everett Saturday night. Options options options.

Let me know what plans are.

The questions I have are. Is ther a way to get in after the autocross starts? What do I have to pay if I am not autocrossing? Is the picnic a kid friendly event? What else would be there to keep spouses and kids happy during the autocross?

Good point, if I come up it'll be for the picnic on Saturday only.

I'm not much for autocrossing and I will probably be in the 356 if I come (DC area caravan)....long story, haven't had time to work on the 914 and may not do much this fall either, fingers crossed I'm wrong though.

The flyer says $20 for the picnic? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif)

We've done this for years where the only cost is "bring something to contribute"

Any particular reason for the deviation?

The picnic is fully catered and hosted by one of the guys that runs the AX, hence the cost.

Bump - I just got offered a free keg if anyone wants to come up Friday night and come to Steves house which is about 10 miles from Cumberland. If your interested let me know. The autocross is a third gear one which you wont find in many places.

Since its getting closer, I will check in more often. I was hoping to come to Fredrick this weekend but our plant just went on strike, so I may have to work this weekend.

I help run tech with Fred, as long as the battery is tied down and the car is not on fire - it will pass tech and if theres a problem we can help fix it, if needed. They are very social and no hipe like you see at SCCA competitions.

I'll probably be up for that Bill. Depends on when I can get free on Friday, or if I have to head up Saturday.

Just under a month away. Caravans anyone?
Also, Assuming that I am able to get there in time for the AX, I don't have a helmet. Will there be loaner helmets there? Do I need gloves?
