I can run open megaphones at Willow Springs and (I think) Buttonwillow. But if I venture out to tracks with noise-restrictions, obviously I will need to run a muffler setup.

Car will have Bursch headers, for now.

What are my best options? I have seen some nice stainless "can" style mufflers from Coast Fabrication, which look very similar (maybe identical) to the ones sold by Jim Patrick.

In terms of stock-ish style, I have heard good things about the Monty stainless 2-in/2-out sausage. There were some at the Dunkels meet this year and they sure looked purty, but spendy (>$600 IIRC).

Supertrapps are also a pretty common setup.

What are my best options that won't get me black-flagged at the track or arrested if I take the car out on the street, but hopefully also won't kill too much power or wallet-padding either? If I ever take the car up to Laguna, I'm assuming I'll have to meet 92dBA, which is a beotch even in a stock early 911/914-6. The carbs alone make a ton of racket and there's no sound-deadening in the car anymore; plus a GT-style engine lid. (I have a spare stock lid if that helps).

I've got megaphones and a weiner muffler for places with the sound level problem. Buttonwillow isn't one of those. Laguna definitely is, but lots of guys in TCRA were pointing the exhaust away from the meter (they told us where it was) and that seemed to help.

I'm not sure if there is noise restriction at Fontana.

nope, the stock lid makes it worse (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
their microphone at laguna is low to the ground.
a GT-lid (or NO lid, like we did) will help cause some of the noise goes out upwards.

been there ...

Supertraps are the way to go...
If you get a black flag, you just tell them that you will put in some more discs (making them quieter)

Usually you are left alone after that..probably because supertraps are adjustable, and you "can" change how loud they are (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beer.gif)

SirAndy - Your Weekend at Laguna link finally inspired me to check out the link that is on all your postings. Man! You don't look anything like your avatar. If I had seen your photo before I sent you my initial response to your comment about my newbie picture posting I would have thought twice before I gave you one of these (IMG:style_emoticons/default/finger.gif) . (I probably would have used this one instead :finger2: )

If you want to go with a muffler I would Fabricate a Flowmaster 2in 2out Muffler, got to be the cheapest way to go and the sound is nice.....

Not that it amounts ot a hill of beans, but you take out discs to get quieter. Still, the point is that Supertraps can be modified at the track until you comply. Pointing away from the meter is important as many things can account for overall decibles.

Another option is to go to a rally style muffler. Mine is similar with two in and three out. I cap the middle two for silent running and pull the caps off when I want more oomph. I took the design for BA's 911 hand book. Originally the factory made the muffler to fit over the megaphones and had the outlets (same size as megaphones) directly behind the inlets. That way they had a choice of free flow or capped and one side muffled outlet. My muffler is a little more 'off the shelf"

Yeah, before I went with Supertrapps I got black flagged once at San Diego.....sucks. Later found out that the dB meter they were using was scrwed up,,,,,, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ar15.gif)

Long drive for nothing and they did not refund my extrance fee......

Anybody know what these are? I thought this car had Supertrapps, but now that I looked again, I don't think they are.

This is the first 914-6 I ever rode in at the track. It's a POC car; Martin somebody. Same class as me, although he doesn't seem to show up for short-track events any more. The car is extremely nice.

2 in 2 out Flowmaster. With muffler and welding.. you should be able to get out for 200$ and it will sound much better than those damn canned things...

On sound:

Laguna gives you three tries as do all the other tracks. They will black flag you and let you know.

Somebody else mentioned the Rally muffler. This setup passes 92db at Laguna. Its a 911 muffler that is opened out on the ends into a different chamber than a typical sport muffler.

Brad,

The price sounds great on the flowmaster...
how much difference would ther be in weight though?

(chris, I'm doing this same search and would love to find out anything you learn)..

my buddy has the patrick system and I should see him at the track in 2weeks (3.6conversion), can't wait to ride in the car and check out the exhaust.

I talked to Patrick when I started my conversion about his mufflers. Asked him if they would work with my Bursch headers, said NO must be used with his headers.

Brant,

The Flowmaster weighs less than the stock muffler and weighs the same as the two cans.

Brad,

I was talking with Allen Johnson. He likes the flowmasters too...

but for Laguna, he was adding a supertrap onto the back of the flowmasters... then sometimes a directional cap to turn the sound away from the meter..

This is starting to sound heavy...
I'm really ... really.. trying to save weight. (I spent $ for an aluminum over steel cell for a few pounds)....

I was not interested in spending the big bucks... but if a patrick or something out there will do the sounds all by itself and not require the extra weight I'm interested......

P.S. I've heard that some of the small bore motors (2.0) can be louder on the meter due to the higher pitch.

what da ya think?
I know... sell me the lightest/economical whole set up.. seriously...
