Isn't the vin often written on the back of the dash too?

Nope, that's the chassis number ...

Too bad... I just threw away a set of late model struts because nobody would buy them (no reserve etc.) They were mint. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

You sold me new Bilsteins. Are there differences in struts btwn early and late model?

Not sure about the fender vin. It appears to have been filled over with bondo maybe, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) but I really don't know if the early cars were stamped there or not. George, Andy, Clay ????????????

And yes both sway bars are add ons.

yes all stamped. Wire brushing away the paint on top of the right front fender well should reveal all. I am sure that it will be 47129 or 47029. Then with the complete serial number call the cops and see if it was stolen years and years ago just for kicks.

What should I say to this? When we piece them together we replace all of the serial numbers so that they match. Have seen too many repairs where serial numbers are removed and never replaced. Never forget the guy with the 914-6 who showed up with the front half of a 76 and the rear half of a 70 914-6, the front half with the 47629 serial number and the rear half with the 914043 sticker in the jamb. An insurance company had paid a body shop to clip the car, they legitimately bought the front clip but never transferred the proper serial numbers.
I cannot say how many times we have seen cars missing the headlight box number plate Way too many have been hit in the front and had front panels and headlight boxes replaced

Mark's car was either a rebody (especially coming from up north) or a car that someone could not get a title for (meaning abandoned for a long period. I seriously doubt that it was stolen

I also seriously doubt it was stolen. I believe you can get a title for it after they run a title search on the correct vin. Titles get lost all the time. Be patient though. I've been through it already in California. Took me 3 months and 10 phone calls to get it. After 3 years California throws away all their records. My car was nowhere in the system. Finally talked to the right lady and she hooked me up with a title.

You should be fine. Grab Waynes' late model struts once he goes 5-lug and everything will bolt right up... that is, if you don't have later struts on there already. Late model calipers use thicker pads but the main thing is, the offset won't work on early struts.

Get a set of late struts up front and enjoy.

Isn't there a difference for the back? I'll just hold tight until Scott gets to it and then we'll figure out what I need to do.

Just got off the phone with Scott. He said it had 2 liter heads but is definately a 1.8 block. We'll get motor running again, used to run pretty good. Looks to be a tailshifter trans that was converted to side shift. Trans will be going to Dr. Evil by way of Hershey so we'll get that figured out. I have brand new brakes - calipers, disks, ect. from PMB so we'll figure out if they will work or exchange for early models. Vin on windshield matched front trunk but Scott didn't have a chance to compare with the vin on my title so thats still a mystery.

Still the same car I drove and enjoyed 25 years ago so we'll move forward on getting it back on the road as the new, improved model.

I will be going to Hershey by way of Scotty's & will be in my truck so if ya need me to deliver your tranny to the evil one just let me know.

I have a title (in my name) that matches the vin on the car and I had the car registered in the past so I'm not worried about registering it again. It's just the true date of the car caught me by surprise. I'm not going to worry about something that happened 25 years ago.

I must be honest guys. I started opening up all these boxes Mark brought, and ....well......I had to close the doors, turn down the lights, and play some Sade for a while last night (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/jerkit.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif)

Mark all of the brake parts are fine.

Eric we need to talk. I have probably close to 10 sets of 914 and one set of 911 calipers for you. Any chance you will be at Hershey ??

Had a bit of a situation with the drivers strut. See pics. housing was f-ed too. fortunately I had a good one for ya (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Remember the unpainted spot I pointed out on the drivers side strut mount? Might explain that (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Had to stop on the front end as both tie rod ends ,and one ball joint, boot are ripped open.

Jup,

That's a big assed Addco rear sway bar....

My DAPO had one on the rear of the 1.8 car and NO front bar. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Must have liked living dangerously.

The attachment brackets on the bottom bolt of the rear shocks look damaged, I think my link attaches to a horizontal point, not an angled one. The square between the shock and link is definitely Addco.

Hey, you gots the rubber in the brackets bolted to the bottom of the trunk floor.

Without it, the sway bar crashes rattles and bangs on every bump and pebble.
