Spent some quality time on Craig's List today and came up with the following. It's pretty scary out there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) . Any thoughts welcome!

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/1666938998.html could be a good deal
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/1661824969.html right year, engine, reasonable price if it's a great car, although he says it's a great start to a resto project??
http://fresno.craigslist.org/cto/1626684784.html very mysterious
http://reno.craigslist.org/cto/1645379348.html no details but looks clean
http://reno.craigslist.org/cto/1637857545.html also very mysterious
http://bakersfield.craigslist.org/cto/1638069553.html could be a great deal
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/1660290408.html another potential good deal
http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/1642799858.html another potnetial good deal
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/1664898301.html looks very clean but small engine.
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ssd/cto/1660080634.html who knows
http://slo.craigslist.org/cto/1664832478.html I prefer FI and looks modified (painted sail panels?)

No...there are a few that are really clean and in the 7-9k range.
none of the lower priced ones seem worth the effort.

Keep your eye on the VT one...keep in touch with him...
for 5k..yes

I know my Boston buddy PM'd you so look at that car.

I did not find any easy ones today, but I was really busy at work and I had no time to call around for you. I will try tomorrow.

Rich, I did get the PM from Drew, he's not quite ready to sell, he said maybe closer to summer.

I don't know what I did to deserve your good graces but know that I am grateful for your help, and I hope to return the favor. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Dude... seriously... two things.

Use the assets here...like Rich... a standup guy as you alerady know.

Second... look west young man... if you are in the position to spend that kind of money you can get a nice west coast car and bring it back here to rust coast.

www.camp914.com Craig is a most upstanding guy and if he does not have it he will come across it shortly.

Thanks td.

not going to lie, buying a car sight unseen freaks me out a bit. But it's not like these cars grow on trees and there are many skilled and knowledgeable individuals willing to help me out...

Secretly I want to get a local car because it will give me an excuse to use my pickup to trailer it back to my house.

Because what would be more awesome than trailering my new 914 back to my house with my pickup?

the answer is: nothing. nothing at all.

We did that once, she's from Seattle (your neck of the woods). We're actually thinking of moving back to PNW and I considered waiting until that move to purchase...but she cleared the funding now and I need to strike while the iron is hot!!

I really don't think it will be easy to get a east coast car that will be as rust free as a cali car. It would be worth 2k to get a car that doesn't need rust repair and that should cover a plane ticket and a nice ride back home or just get it shipped. Rust repair by a good shop can easily go over 2k.

Now probably is a good time to buy one though. I would try Rich's friend and any others he knows first though.

on the other hand is he sells it for that much he is certainly helping our 914 values!!!!!

The color change alone kills the car for the price.

According to this thread, signal orange was a factory option in '74:

That white one does look beautiful. From the pic, the battery area looks pretty scary tough...
