Call AMEX and open a Claim. This is different than cancelling it. You have I believe 60 Days from the charge to do this. They will hold the funds or "re-claim" them until the case is resolved. The shop cannot turn you in for collection as it is AMEX that "re-claimed" the funds. When you fill out the paperwork part of the claim, be very detailed. He has to respond to AMEX in order to ever get any money. Until it is over, do not bad-mouth him. Do not respond to him directly about the matter, only talk to AMEX. You will Win if everything you say is correct.

Never go back to the shop. The old axiom will apply, when someone says something good about someone or shop, it stays with with the receipient. When someone says something bad, it breeds like a wildfire.

oh !!
and don't forget to be that dissatisfied customer that tells 100x more people about the poor service and lack of such than you you have told about a good experience.

the old saying that a happy customer will tell 10 people about a good experience and a dissatisfied one will tell 100.

i still will never order from dominos, or have anything to do with roy robinson chevorlet in marysville wa.

that is so true. i should have walked when during my first meeting with him he trashed a significant customer (someone I know) of his in the first 5 minutes of our conversation. This customer has a stable of at least a dozen collector cars including several porsches from a 356 to 911 turbo. Said that customer was a pain in the ass because he always bitched about his bill...go figure. I intend to share his comments with this customer.

not to be flippant or smug but.... there's yer sign!

the guy is a jack ass and thinks that he can pick his customers to treat right. he's gonna be on his way down.

I think if you cancel AX he can turn you into collection and trash your credit. The if you cancel AX what action should the court take on your behalf? I'm not an attorney but I would do some reasearch outside this forum before just doing the AX thing. Also He may be able to lean your car.

After this latest I have no problem saying the guy is clearly a dick. I NEVER talk trash about a customer no matter how bad my experience was with them ( fortunately I have yet to have a bad one ) That alone should ward anyone off from a shop. Stop this arrogant prick in his tracks!

Tell them of what happened and I am sure they will have recommendations on where to take it next...

If you want, we can do the exhaust gaskets here...can't turn rotors though....hb

great idea though I'm concerned if I post the facts where he'll possibly see them I'll tip my hand as far as my claim - assuming it goes to small claims court. I don’t want to arm him with advance notice of what my assertions are and give him an opportunity to concoct a bull&@#% response.

BTW - last night i took one of my daughters out for dinner in the 914. On the way home i experienced for the 1st time a pop/hiss/hesitation on acceleration from what sounded like the carbs. I just spent $769.37 for a complete carb rebuild...what could it be from?

It could be valve adjustment. There are alot more knowledgable guys here that will offer more direction than me but I would check into that.

BTW: Speaking of diognosing cars over the internet, why would a shop do all that carb work without doing a baseline inspection. Adjust the valves, perform a leakdown, then move to the wires, plugs, dizzy, etc. It would be nice to know if you are trying to tune an engine with a valve seat failure before pouring a bunch of money down the drain.

That being said if the air pump is sound 90% of carb problems are electrical.

Oh, and do you know what cam is in oyur engine? If your running a stock injection cam with those carbs the engine won't like it.

I don't have specifics on cam however according to the previous owner(s) the stock cam was replaced when the carb work was performed.

This is just my opinion. I'm old and have been trying to fix old cars a long time. Hard to find parts, replacing cheap third party parts while your there, that were sorta working, getting rusty bolts loose or out without spending all day or drilling broken studs out, all of these things are way past the normal mechanic jobs on later model cars. These things can't be anticipated until the job starts, every old car is different depending on the prior mechanic and his repair knowledge of the system he was repairing. Also was the previous owner a weekend mechanic with limited skills and tools? I'm glad I'm not a 914 mechanic because I think half of my time would be spent trying to justify bills to customers either before, during or after a repair. It sorta reminds me of fixing old neglected left out in the weather lawnmowers for people that think the work is simple and not worth much. A professional mechanic's time is valuable, in my opinion as much as other professionals that are educated and experienced in other fields except that the auto mechanic is always getting his hands hurt and his muscles sore, with dirt and grease stinking them and their clothes up, a lot of people would never want that sort of job. There is not a easy answer to servicing old cars with several problems but there are honest shops that try to educate owners about the problems that can arise when the service is started. I don't think a definate quote could be made unless it is a very simple procedure. Thats why a lot of auto tranny shops charge double on a job to cover the redo's that come back and a lot do. I think you were overcharged and the job wasn't completed, but who knows how much more work it will take to get the car right. By the hour is the only way I would try to fix several problems on a old car and the time spent trying to find the parts and explaining it to the customer is part of the job.

Please wake me up from this nightmare. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse - it gets worse. Wash the car and took her out for a spin tonight. Last nights symptoms are even worse. MAJOR sputtering, hissing and popping on acceleration. Almost seems like I'm running on less than all cylinders then they all seem to kick in once I get the RPM's up. I drove the car all the way from RI without incident to bring her home. Take her to BEHE Performance and $3,000 later I have a car that will barely make it around the block.

Are there any shop owners on the forum that would be willing to provide a written estimate based on the scope of services shown on BEHE’s bill attached in my first post? Also, how much or number of hours to replace all the exhaust related gaskets?

I need to begin gathering documentation to fight this.

Where do you live? Lots of us in the area that can help you. You don't need to be specific, just post the nearest town or something.

I know you want to fix this with your wallet and keep your hands cleanish, but there are some basic things that will help you greatly, and knowing them will make 914 ownership much easier - like valve adjustments.

Hell, drive up to York PA and visit me. I have been tuning my carbs now and nearly have them right. if its a carb problem, I bet I can find it - or at least help narrow your search. Course, my weekends are busy for the next few weeks - such is September.... Or PM degreeoff in Bowie - he taught me a lot about carb issues in a single afternoon.

Thanks for the offer Zach. Fixing with my wallet isn't the preferred option but when you lack skills like myself your kinda (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sheeplove.gif) I'm truly new to working on cars but I intend to learn as much as i can.

My immediate concern is to get the car up and running as I was hoping to convince the wife to make it out to the cookout. I also need to resolve this issue with the shop while its current.

Longterm I hope to gain more knowledge so to work on the car myself. In fact, a member already reached out who is local and who works on his own 914 and V-dubs and offered to take a peek the car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) . I'm located in woodbine, MD...20 minutes east of Frederick.
