My 914 has a P-hood crest, I can't stand it. Any time someone asks what kind of car it is, I say it's a VW Type-4. Never reference Porsche at all. and then teener owners bitch when other Porsche owners say it's 'Just a VW' and not a real Porsche. You can't have it both ways... (not saying you particularly, but more in general). Our 914 was our first Porsche, and what we had when we joined PCA. We went to our first meeting in NNJR and have NEVER been ridiculed or put down as 'only a 914 owner'. The at-the-time region President, membership chair, and AX chairs all had 914's. It never occured to me that there was any bias against 914's until I got onto this forum. And ESPECIALLY when we tried to put together a 914 gathering at Charlotte Porsche Parade. Jeez.... To me, a 914 is just as much a Porsche as a 356 is. |

To me, a 914 is just as much a Porsche as a 356 is. Bob, I totally agree. Every PCA club (3) I have been part of treated me, as a 914 owner, as one of them and EVERYONE of the old guys have had 914s in the past. Go to any NNJR track event and there are a handful 35+ yr old 914s still on the track (almost more than 924, 944 or 928s combined). Heck, I get offers to buy the car when I go to club events by guys with GT3s, and every real Porsche club member there loves 914s. (Sure there are some new guys with brand new 997s (as their first Porsche) who don't know what it is, but they are just ignorant.) The only stigma I ever saw was from the ignorant who thought it was a Fiat when I was a younger guy (the 80s). I think that many people here define themselves by their "misfit" status and the easiest way to feel close to a group is to unite against a common enemy (either real or imagined). Don't get me wrong, many of my friends are misfits and I love them, but it helps to understand. |

Like anybody wants to know, but my opinion:
914's Porsche = 1976's with no type47 sticker and all 914-6's. 914's VW = all the ones (like mine) that have type47 sticker on them. Just kinda the way I've thought of them. I've read they 76's all went down the same assembly line the 911's did just like the 914-6's did. All the rest of the 914's went down a VW assembly line. Unless my info is wrong? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) Either way, it's all in fun that we have such a diverse model. Pretty cool. I like to take the humble approach. "No, no, just a VW, nothing special" especially from the general public. Don't like them looking at or touching it. I've found they are less interested if it's a "VW" than a "Porsche" Back to the 916's: If you like them, just make your own! I did. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Attached image(s) |

Root, I agree with the celebration of a diverse model.
Heck, I love the 914, even with its flaws (no seriously, it has a few... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) ). To me, the Karmann bodies and VW underpinnings just add to the diverse past and soul of the car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cheer.gif) Hell, I was a VW guy before I was a 914 guy! (or is that redundant... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) ) |

I guess its a hot car to replicate right now. Two "916 clones" on EBay right now. No thanks, not that they don't look like great 914's, but they don't have steel roofs. The first and foremost important part of the 916. Everything else is secondary. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-Porsch...=item2c571d0c3b http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-porsch...=item1c15729350 |
