I know of at least 10 in the Memphis area, and I have seen a few more, just don't know who they belong to.

So, is anyone working on a map??? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) I tried the scribble maps but not near as easy to use as the old frapper.

Beyond my skills. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/type.gif)

I just set up a map via google. Set so that anyone can add their info.

I started by placing a marker and titling it with my car info: '74 LE Creamsicle

In the text area, I put my forum name and then info about my 914s.

Take a look and add your info. Seems easy enough.

Bravo! I added mine too.

Directions for those who need:
Click the link. Then click the "Edit" button. Then click the pushpin icon to add a pin, and click in the vicinity of your car on the map... type in a title and description. Then click "Done" on the sidebar.

Everyone add yours!

(I imagine there's a batch way to take the VIN database, x-referenced with the owners' geographical location from profiles, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) but maybe due to consent issues we should just let people add their own for now.)

If I may make a slight change. The edit button kinda messsed me up. Find your local BEFORE you hit edit and then add the push pin. Once you hit edit and select push pin I don't think yo ucan reposition the map.

Got it We can practice with this one in the meantime...

The edit button is above the map name in the left column, next to the "Collaborate"

Sir Andy... didn't mean to step on anybody's toes.

Will the official 914World map allow us to enter our info or will it pull from the database?

Currently, your location field is neither mandatory info nor is it formatted in any way.
The current field in the database is pretty much useless for any sort of automation as it is a free text field with NO validation for input.

The new member map will tie your entry to your profile, however, everyone will have to add and place their own marker themselves.
You'll be able to upload a image, info text and links with your marker.

The members map will be clustered like the example i posted earlier. Without clustering, the map performance will degrade at about 250 markers or more. At about 1,000+ markers, a map becomes unusable. Thus the clustering ...

Can we make this somehow private? it sounds like this could also be an invaluable resource for car thieves.

How so? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Remember, it's up TO YOU to place the marker.

Place it anywhere in Berkeley, who says you have to put it exactly in front of your house? Drag it onto your local police station for all i care ...

As far as i'm concerned, city level would be more than enough for the map. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

I had thought the same thing which is why I set up the map I started as "private".
But the suggestion of placing your marker NOT at your actual address is a good one.
And I agree, city level is good enough.

I put my marker on the Google map in the right vicinity, but not on my street.

BTW, I think I figured out the mystery of the "EDIT" button on poorsche914's map. If you're currently logged into a google account (Gmail, Google Docs, etc.), you are able to edit the map. If you're not... no edit button.

Do I win a prize?

Look forward to seeing what Andy's working on!
