I was looking to save a few bucks and recently bought (on ebay) a vellios oil tank for my new street 914 6 conversion project. Heavier than a DWD tank, the vellios tank is cast rather than fabricated. Reportedly, they have also leak issues. (At the seams? Elsewhere?)

I have a DWD oil tank in the "zonk" and the quality is top notch, but my limited budget on this project meant that the ebay price was well within my current budget.

The tank has two additional tapped holes (besides the mounting holes) that I assume to be for sportmatic oil lines (pretty small holes, tho) that I'd like to fill. Anybody know for sure? Are there other issues using these tanks?

Rather than just put bolts in with sealer tape, I'd like to tap a piece of aluminum rod, thread it in and weld the top. (I've been practicing my aluminum welding (TIG) in an evening class that I've been taking. This will be a good test.)

Any other thoughts?

Pet showed the sporto and normal six as having the same tank part number.....the sporto tank set up....I would weld up the unused holes...

I stocked and sold those tanks for several years, and stopped doing so for the reasons you mention along with delivery issues.

Every one I got just had the two drilled and tapped bosses at the top, at the stock mounting location. My guess is someone FUBAR'd and make extra holes in the wrong spots.

I am looking at a tank that i have here from the current run. The bosses with the red arrows are not tapped or drilled. if the holes are small then i would guess that someone wanted more mounting points. Having just seen pictures of a members sporto tank, the holes would have to be fairly large to be used for oil. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
