an other view of the Triad Exhaust.
Nice sound, nice construction, more HP due to large tubes increasing exhaust flow .... Attached image(s) |

do you still have the late style heat exchangers. that type limits your choise of muffler setups. with the smog talk i presume you have a 75'.

QUOTE Maybe I can get a Triad for farthers day Geeze Kerry, first your car is Ravenna green like mine, now you want a Triad like mine (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clap56.gif) I say go for it, I love mine...what I'd really like is to JetHot coat it in a bright silver color. I gave up on my exahust tips, they were bolted on and just about came off on the track a couple months back, haha. Rouser: What kind of tips are you using? Mine were/are 2.5"/3" in/out and were bolt on. Maybe I should just get a friend to weld them on. BTW here's mine w/ the old tips and no valence: (IMG:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads2/Triadsmall1079918966.jpg) |

Nathan,
I trimmed my tips about 2 inches, then put the tips on, screwed a sheetmetal screw through them (2 on each) there's no way mine are coming off, even without the screws they are on very tight. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/post-2-1066079279.jpg) |

QUOTE What did you have to do to modify the rear valance for the tail pipe on the passanger side. Just make a cardboard pattern of the current notch, than copy it on the opposite side of the valence panel. Using a saber saw, carefully cut out anything that doesn't look like an exhaust notch and Presto!, dual notches. QUOTE What kind of tips are you using? I gutted the mounting hardware from a pair of APC muffler tips (similar to 157820; I don't have the actual part # with me). I slipped the ovals onto the ends (like a glove), drilled a hole from underneath, and tightly mounted them; they ain't comin' off. Look fine ... lasts long time. |

My car is a 76 which I still have to get smogged. |

I did the sebring exhaust as i was monetarily disadvantaged, the old muffler was blowing out acorn shells. it needs a support for the muffler or something to keep it from "flopping" about unsupported. i used some plumbing strap. ghetto, but until i wear it out and can get a triad....

If you've got a '76 and you're in California, last time I checked Antioch was still in Ca, you're screwed as far as any mods and being smog legal. You need to have a cat and an egr pipe attached and functioning. None of the aftermarket exhausts I have seen work right for 75-76 smogged 914.
That picture of the triad exhaust scares me. How can they tell you you'll get more flow when all the gasses have to pass through that one small pipe in the middle? Anyone seen any actual dyno sheets on any of these exhausts you're recommending? With the exception of a header system, ie no heat exchangers, the best set up is the stock 2.0 muffler. A few years ago we did a bunch of dyno runs with the big aftermarket mufflers and they all fell short of the stock ones. Then we cut a 2.0 one open and gutted it like the 911 sport mufflers and got I think 1-2 more hp. That's it. However none of this even applied to the 75-75 generation cars because the heat exchangers are completely different and they make the exhaust do an unnecessary 180 degree turn right after the head. |

QUOTE How can they tell you you'll get more flow when all the gasses..... 'cause it's louder??? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) If I meet up with Jim this weekend, I'll have a look at his exhaust to verify if it is stock or not...the PO, might have 'known" somebody in the smog arena to get it passed............ I had a smog legal Busch on my old '75 (sorta, the EGR fitting/port on the exhaust was not drilled...I guess it was "optional" ???? ) |

I've seen quite a few variations but these days the smog guys are realy picky and enthusiasts get no love. I heard an unqualified rumor that the state was going to change the smog laws soon to allow no smog checks for 76 and older cars but I'll believe it when I see it. |

What about having no muffler and having just megaphones or straight pipes out the back. How is this performance wise, does it gain or loose HP.

The Triad looks very nice. I like the dual outlets.
My personal preference is all factory. From everything I've seen it's pretty hard to beat. The 2.0 "hotdog" or "banana" muffler is basically the same as the venerable 911 muffler, which is pretty darn good from a performance aspect. The Monza shin cutters are pretty loud and heavy. From my experience, louder feels more powerful and usually isn't. I would like to see a dyno comparison of: Stock H/E's and stock muffler SSI's with stock muffler And then each of the aftermarkets with both stock H/E's and SSI's, Bursch, Triad, Monza, and then Kerry Hunter and Racer Chris' set up (which looks very nice). Maybe when I get an extra $50k or so to spare (yea right) I can pop a dyno in the shop. PK (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) ps How can you tell someones a 914 "oldtimer"?? From the scars on his shins from the Monza exhaust tips! |

Grassroots Motorsports magazine did dyno a 2.0L with SS heat exchangers and stock and Bursch mufflers, Kerry hunter Header and muffler, and Tangerine header and muffler. Not much difference between stock and Bursch, just plus or minus a horsepower or two here and there on the curve.

The Bursch actually fell off quicker above peak hp than the stock muffler. |

No muffler is so loud to the point of being undriveable. You also loose low end torque.

Mittlemotor Stainless Steel - last muffler you'll ever have to buy and it sounds GREAT.
