We Just bought our new house in PA (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It has a two car garage (My first house with a garage). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif)

The wife got a nice kitchen and I got my garage. I want to paint the floor and was thinking about the "U-coat it" floor system. I really like the checkerboard floors I have seen on TV. Has anyone done this before?

Cheers

One thing that will or should sway whether you want to paint your garage floor is....

Is there a vapor barrier under the slab? you can do all the prep work, and follow the directions to the letter, but if you have moisture migrating up through the slab... the floor finish will blister...

Well that seems to make sense but how does one find out if the house has this issue? The house was built in the late 80's.

Thanks

I'm a contractor. Tim's right. Moisture will lift the paint. You may want to look into a stain product.

Whatever you choose to do, the prep work is 90% of the job. Don't think you can just sweep it and paint it. You gotta etch it with acid and pressure wash it.

Than repeat step one.

How is the house laid out?

Single story or two? If two, is the garage under the second floor of the house?

Some places don't require the garage to have a vapor barrier. But if it is a part of the main structure of the house it will.

It is detached, about 10' from the house.

I would say a detached garage has a 50% chance of having visqueen under it. If it is not required by local codes, the builder may not have put it down.

(I know I wouldn't)
