Watched a show tonight about Drifiting in the US, my wife commented about me driving our 911 like that (hanging the tail out, yippeeeee)...
I think the 914 might be better suited for this sport. Not too sure what the rules are, I wonder if they allow engine transplants or conversions??? hmmmmm Comments??? |

actually I purchased this car with the intention of doing just that....that was over a year ago...maybe if it ever runs for more than 5 min without me breaking something.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

These cars aren't regular cars. They are full on race cars. The 901 would be the least of your worries. It would probably be easiest to go with a 3.6 and a G50 tranny.
I think on a 914 you would need to strengthen the rear suspension pickups because you'd probably rip them off in no time. Mike, was this the show Rides? I saw it last night as well. Isn't it weird that they got rid of Jason Priestly but found a guy that sounds almost just like him? |

I watched that show too last night - Rides on TLC.

I criticize drifting because of the beater cars they use. Comeon, you cant be serious... a 1985 Toyota Corolla? I know the 914 can be considered a VW or whatever, but i'd rather drive a huffy then a corolla...

the use of the Corolla is sorta "symbolic" since it was one of the first cars that was used and had a following..........I guess you are free for your opinion, but the same could be said (is said) of the 914 by others (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I like all cars, I'm not a "Porsche" elitist (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I had a great time watching the show, too, and was especially impressed by the sequence of three cars in the parking lot.
Do you suppose that the D1 cars are equipped with a mechanism to actuate the front brakes? It would seem a little easer to break the tires free with some front brake input, and might help keep the speed under control. I've seen a device that locks the front brakes added to muscle cars to assist in burnouts and launches. -R |

They are not using beater Toyota Corollas at the top end of the sport. Regardless of the body these are purpose built race cars.
I confess that I initially thought it was stupid because it looked like a bunch of kids doing donuts in the street but after watching the Rides show I have a ton of respect for these guys. It may not be racing but these drivers have lots of car control skill. It's judged more like ice skating. |

Drifting would be a shit pile more fun on ice and snow (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Used to do it in a Willy's Jeep in pastures in Kansas during the winter - no spikes in the tires - wheeeeeeeeeee!

I'm underwhelmed.
Now WOO cars on a mile of dirt is sumthin' else. Technically, this stuff is not "drifting" but a power slide.....doesn't sound so cool tho. In my experience, a 914 sux at this sorta thing....unless you have 500 lbs of batteries in each trunk (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) They're way to twitchy to hang the back end out for any length of time. Rotating the back end around a cone is really just the beginning of a snap spin.....if you catch it right, you look good, if not....oops. You gotta go back to whem drivers were fat & tires were skinny to see really good drifts. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

I haven't seen any of the programs on drifting, but can provide some input.
This is what I discovered by accident: If you have a Smart ARB up front it isn't hard to get the rear end to move exactly where you want it. When mine was set way to tight during an autox, the sensation was that I was going so spin, but didn't. I was totally sideways, but also totally in control. Actually fun. |

I could do this, in fact, I have in the winter like Slits says, on the show and ice for fun. I would rather do it in an old beater though than my 914. Tear up some rice burner and not my car. I am sure most would agree on that. I did some drifiting at the WCC in Howards car, full control and sliding around the corners. It was fun.
