Watched a show tonight about Drifiting in the US, my wife commented about me driving our 911 like that (hanging the tail out, yippeeeee)...

I think the 914 might be better suited for this sport.

Not too sure what the rules are, I wonder if they allow engine transplants or conversions??? hmmmmm

Comments???

actually I purchased this car with the intention of doing just that....that was over a year ago...maybe if it ever runs for more than 5 min without me breaking something.... headbang.gif

I hope so. Someone at WCC AX mentioned it looked like I was trying out for a drifting competition. I suspect I could run the whole track using only the side windows if I tried. lol2.gif
I love changing drift angles in a long sweeper with a little throttle input.
Sure was fun!

*sniff* I smell impending 901 breakage.

These cars aren't regular cars. They are full on race cars. The 901 would be the least of your worries. It would probably be easiest to go with a 3.6 and a G50 tranny.

I think on a 914 you would need to strengthen the rear suspension pickups because you'd probably rip them off in no time.

Mike, was this the show Rides? I saw it last night as well. Isn't it weird that they got rid of Jason Priestly but found a guy that sounds almost just like him?
PorscheTom
I watched that show too last night - Rides on TLC.

While I respect the power it must take to get your tires to constantly break loose like that, I just don't understand the 'sport'...? slap.gif

Speed is not an issue so how do they judge the winner?

You must have taken a pee break when they explained the points smile.gif

Speed is a consideration with the points (a car going faster while sideways will get more points than a slower sideways car), Points are also given with how well you can control the car staying closer to the walls with the @ss end of the car while drifting is worth more than staying in the middle of the course.

also, since the course changes direction, getting setup for the next turn/curve is very important,

At first I thought it was a goofy sport as well, but I bet half of the auto-x wannabes on this BBS cannot control thier car when it goes into a slide......I know spinning the tires and scrubbing off speed is not the fastest way around a auto-x course, but there are some corners that you can use a little drifting to get setup for the next corner or straight-away

what is funny is that many P-car people make fun of drifting, but when Hurley Haywood is test driving a Porsche on the track and pitching the rear end out people are awestruck..hypocrites I say, LOL mueba.gif mueba.gif
MattR
I criticize drifting because of the beater cars they use. Comeon, you cant be serious... a 1985 Toyota Corolla? I know the 914 can be considered a VW or whatever, but i'd rather drive a huffy then a corolla...
Mueller
the use of the Corolla is sorta "symbolic" since it was one of the first cars that was used and had a following..........I guess you are free for your opinion, but the same could be said (is said) of the 914 by others smile.gif I like all cars, I'm not a "Porsche" elitist biggrin.gif

I had a great time watching the show, too, and was especially impressed by the sequence of three cars in the parking lot.

Do you suppose that the D1 cars are equipped with a mechanism to actuate the front brakes?

It would seem a little easer to break the tires free with some front brake input, and might help keep the speed under control.

I've seen a device that locks the front brakes added to muscle cars to assist in burnouts and launches.

They are not using beater Toyota Corollas at the top end of the sport. Regardless of the body these are purpose built race cars.

I confess that I initially thought it was stupid because it looked like a bunch of kids doing donuts in the street but after watching the Rides show I have a ton of respect for these guys. It may not be racing but these drivers have lots of car control skill. It's judged more like ice skating.
SLITS
Drifting would be a shit pile more fun on ice and snow biggrin.gif Used to do it in a Willy's Jeep in pastures in Kansas during the winter - no spikes in the tires - wheeeeeeeeeee!
J P Stein
I'm underwhelmed.
Now WOO cars on a mile of dirt is sumthin' else.

Technically, this stuff is not "drifting" but a power slide.....doesn't sound so cool tho.

In my experience, a 914 sux at this sorta thing....unless you have 500 lbs of batteries in each trunk biggrin.gif They're way to twitchy to hang the back end out for any length of time. Rotating the back end around a cone is really just the beginning of a snap spin.....if you catch it right, you look good, if not....oops.

You gotta go back to whem drivers were fat & tires were skinny to see really good drifts. biggrin.gif
Randal
I haven't seen any of the programs on drifting, but can provide some input.

This is what I discovered by accident: If you have a Smart ARB up front it isn't hard to get the rear end to move exactly where you want it.

When mine was set way to tight during an autox, the sensation was that I was going so spin, but didn't. I was totally sideways, but also totally in control.

Actually fun.
DrifterJay
beater car......damn I think it looks cool.....
DrifterJay
wait MattR.....heres your beater for you....let the imports suck battle begin again....then again he may be driving a beater....but he can probably drive a wee bit better than you....
biggrin.gif
skline
I could do this, in fact, I have in the winter like Slits says, on the show and ice for fun. I would rather do it in an old beater though than my 914. Tear up some rice burner and not my car. I am sure most would agree on that. I did some drifiting at the WCC in Howards car, full control and sliding around the corners. It was fun.
SLITS
Nobody has addressed the fact that these have to be older cars. It's really hell to try to "powerslide" a front wheel drive car burnout.gif smoke.gif slap.gif

not true, at least the "older cars" statement....rear wheel drive Japanese cars are still available overseas smile.gif

The new GTO is rear wheel drive (with a High Performance 350, oh boy boldblue.gif )
DrifterJay
hmmm....s2000....350z.....240sx....Subaru wrx(yes it is and can be done for drift)....Toyota supra.......Since when are these "older cars"...hell the oldest is no more than 2-3 years....
914efi
If you hate the old toyotas, you should do a little looking around the web. There are some really cool things happening. club4ag.com is one place to look. There are lots of really neat old japanese cars being rediscovered.
Brett W
I saw the show, they have some neat stuff going on but I just can't get into. The winner is determined through judging, it has nothing to do with the time around the race track. 914 don't like being driven with the ass hainging out. THey tend to do things like snap around on you. Try a 911 it would be much better suited to this. Grassroots Motorsports has a big article on it this issue.

It would be better if they were using WOO cars. 900hp alcohol injected winged wonder children that drive better sideways than in a straight line would be way cooler.
MattR
Im not going to get into an import vs import battle (?). I just think the corolla is more of an economy car, and was built like that from the factory. Yes, people have made them very quick and such, but the thought of driving that caliber car is just funny to me. I know it can be done and has been done. I went to a drift event in irwindale last year and it was something you have to see for yourself. I dont consider myself a porsche elitist (hell, i drive a vw wink.gif) considering most of the cars I really like are American.

I understand drifting is a popular sport and brings a lot of people into motorsports, so for that its important. Im just saying I dont like it... thats it. Its not bad or stupid or anything like that... I dont like watching it because I dont like the cars. I would MUCH rather watch an R8 grace the track then a corolla/legend/240sx.
