Just looked at a realy nice sc targa, great shape, low miles, and beginning to think about selling the 914....it'll cost me an extra 6k or so, but is it worth it?
the 914 has been so good to me, reliable as hell, and cheap to own and run... what'd would you all do? |

Sorry dude, you know the rules: Once you own a 914 you must keep it forever unless it breaks in half or you are selling it to buy another one. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Having 914-itis is like having herpes. You can treat it, and you may even be able to control it, but you can NEVER get rid of it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chairfall.gif) |

I think that's true, at least about the not letting it go...I've driven 911's before, but none have been as much fun on a back road than the teener.

Nice 911's are dime a dozen (meaning they are plentiful). You can always find a nice 911. So I would never sell my 914 to buy a 911. I've had two 911's over the years. A signal orange '70 911-S (30,000 original miles when I sold it) and a white '85 carrera (7,000 miles on it when I sold it) and they were great, fun cars but for some reason I keep going back to the 914. Maybe because my first Porsche was a 914. I will probably have another 911 some day. But I will never be without a 914. I've owned a 914 for 31 straight years now and they still make me smile......
By the way, a 914-6 will give you the best of both worlds. |

Different characteristics....dependable as all getout (I have an 80 SC Targa that I upgraded with OEM widebody components)....do what I did and just add the 911 to the stable! My reasoning was I just had to have 1 front engine, 1 mid-engine and 1 rear engined porsche.....then you can rotate through all the fun!

I've struggled with this as well. I bought a 914 last October, then a 911sc in June..had the intention of selling the 914 but just can't.
The 911 has prestige and power...looks great, awesome car. The 914 is actually more fun to drive... lower, feels more like a racer and I don't get nervous about doing my own work. If the 911 you're looking at is a good deal I say go for it. But keep the 914. |

i have had 3 911's. the 914 is more fun and more unique. but if you do buy a 911, get a coupe. they look better.

My Targa leaked bad. I'm talking buckets of water and mildew. I replaced all the seals - still leaked.

Interesting that this topic should pop up now. I'm going tonight to look at a black low mileage SC. I've been looking for a really nice black 914-6 for a long time and have just come up empty.
I think the 911 would make a better daily driver than the 914 and be better for road trips. I'm not going to sell the 914 though. Ideally I'll replace it with a 914-6 3.2 someday. In the mean time the 911 will satisfy the need for speed at less than the cost of putting a 3.2 in my current 914. |

I really like driving our SC coupe, but I've heard the targas are not all they're cracked up to be. Noisy, leaks (worse than the 914). As much as I like the SC, I'll never give it up for the 914. Apples & oranges, but the 914 is just flat more fun to drive. Only my .02

I love my 911 SC Targa. Yes it is noiser then a coupe..but what opened air car isn't? Yes it leaks alittle..but open air driving is fun...so I only take it out on sunny days!
If you want power, a real cruiser, a great handler get a 928...believe me once you drive one you'll be amazed. My 911 SC Targa: Attached image(s) |

I have a 993 cabriolet.
Its not nearly as much fun to drive as my 3.2 914 but the 993 has AC and an automatic. Two very important features when your stuck in traffic in LA with a suit on. Believe it or not my 914 is now a winter car since it doesn't have AC. -Steve |

If I had the choice between an 914 and a 911 I would definitaly go for the 911, but all I can afford is a 914(and I cant realy even afford it).
914's are great and all(and the women love you in them) but a 911 is just a much better looking and more practicall car. I have never gotten to drive a 911 and have only gotten to ride in a 996 but still would rather have an 80's 911 than a 914 but definitaly a coupe. Allthough a 914 gives you a feeling that not many other cars could Its so low to the ground and just feels like your in a race car and ofcourse the handling is amazing. Well either way you go your still gonna have one hell of an awesome car. |

QUOTE(Martin Baker @ Aug 3 2004, 09:20 PM) Only 911 I would get rid of my GT replica for is a 993 RS Cup, and that is out of my leauge...for now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) I wish I could afford that car too. I can't afford my 993 cabriolet tiptronic, but I will keep it until I get layed off and then I will sell it. The 911 is more practical. I can get my 6 year old twin girls in the back seat and my 9 year old in the front. Before the 911 the girls would fight over who's turn it is to ride in the 914. -Steve |

Well hell, I think you should keep the 914 AND buy the 911! They just look so good together. If purchased right and cared for - they are very justifiable to the interest of rolling stock that will only appreciate.
