Replaced melted brake light switch, installed new throttle and clutch cable ...

Took her for a testdrive and got hit by low flying bird... hate bird poop (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) but the car drives fine (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif)

Why would your brake light switch get soo hot?

Just read that the 1976 914's are "relatively rare" and only 4,200 of them were made.

This made my day. That's like #100 on a list of great things I've discovered about my '76 since pulling it out of a barn 4 years ago having no idea what I was getting - other than it had little rust.....as George says, "no 914 has no rust...."

(Some other examples: Car is from LA, has 911 master cylinder, new rack & pinion, 320i front brake calipers, body is incredibly tight & solid, and too many other good details to list - a "dream" barn find.....)

How many other '76 914s are here?

Ignore the electrical tape bandaid on the soft top install. Dash top looks good though.

Studied wiring diagrams. Traced wires and cleaned up connections. Had a few frustrating moments but all was worth it some time later when I got 12.38V at pin 87 of the fuel pump relay. Now to figure out how the PO got power to the pump, as it clearly is not connected to the relay …

Really nice Rich. Thank you.

Tempted to get one, but anderssj gave me one that's almost perfect - tiny well-repaired split in center above tach where you usually can't see it, rest is like new.

Next question is - how long did it take you to remove the old and install the new? Did I read 6+ hours somewhere?

'76 914's are left over '75 inventory. When I first acquired mine George Hussey told me (no I did not buy it from him) that those were the best of the 914 models. That kind of went over my head at the time as I kept reading about Big Ugly Bumpers, low HP numbers, heavy doors, highly desirable '73 models, etc, etc. It didn't help matters that I was bitten with the HP Bug and went that direction with the next 2 914's. But when changing the ign switch on the '76 I began to appreciate, if not admire, what a nice and unmolested car this is. I'm glad that I didn't rape this one as it has it's own unique set of values. The rubber is still in great shape, no cracks in the dash, top or a pillars. Windows meet the roof nicely and it can go thru a car wash. I'll be going thru this one again to bring her back to her glory days later this year or early next year. I need to patch a few holes in the Hell Hole and replace a section of channel in the frunk. Other than that I look forward to driving this car on the hi way again as she is quiet, comfortable and feels new. Having a '70, '73 & '76 in my herd I'm now inclined to agree with George.

Yes, yes, and yes! Ditto here - had I had no idea what I was getting and no idea what a 914 was. Feel the same way about mine. Mine was made in 10/75.

I also understand that the '76's have the 2.0's that were the most advanced version with the best engine casing, stronger than earlier ones.

But have read differing opinions on D-Jet vs. L-Jet....not a concern to me now as I'm running Webers. But I have fully functioning '76 D-Jet system I'm planning to try next winter. I need 1st hand experience comparing my great Webers with the D-Jet to decide for myself, my driving, which is best.

I love having my car-nut friends drive my '76. Only former 914 owners know what to expect, and all others are quite surprised by handling, power, ride, and comfort. Hard to believe a '70's car - really late '60's design - can combine all of these so well.

Finally got around to switching out the gas tank and installing the stainless steel lines into the '74.
I've been driving the car without a care in the world and without any issues and loving every moment of it but, when we pulled the tank out of the car yesterday, the fuel lines underneath the tank basically tore and pulled apart with zero effort on our part. We we're literally just pulling the tank out of the car.
Needless to say, I'm glad I got to it now, before it became a real problem.
While we have everything out, we're going to replace the sending unit and all the other things that should be done at this time as well.

Beautiful job! A bit ashamed to say much nicer than mine, and I have new powder-coated tins........

My main problem is engine being covered with dust as my driveway is 1/2 mile gravel (through neighbors land) after a couple trips....

May I ask which carbs you have? Look like Webers.......

BUMMER! Just read this in George's Tech Tips 700 on p. 5 right at his intro to the 4 engine:

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/hosting.photobucket.com-21449-1629146212.1.JPG)

Mine has always run warm even after I thoroughly cleaned all the fins, air passages, oil cooler, etc. when I had the engine out earlier this year - but it is cooler than it was before I cleaned everything. Car had 60,600 original (verified) miles on it when I got it, 65k now, engine never opened.

If I am running for over 40 - 50 min. on interstate at 65 - 70mph in ambient temps above 90 deg. F, the temp needle is close to the 3/4 mark....but never more. Wondering if this is in the "too hot" category? Thinking of installing 2nd oil cooler with fan this winter. Would love to keep oil in the 200 deg. F range.........

But another 914 guy who is an expert mechanic and VW Beetle builder said the temp was fine when he drove it.

Other '76 owners - how many of you deal with hot engines?

GN

PS: I have new thermostat from Tangerine.....

They all run close to the red mark. The gauge on the earlier models really spooked drivers. Thats why Porsche changed them later. You can always install some aftermarket digital gauge and sender to verify.

How could the block affect temperature like that? Not doubting that it does but just want to understand how.

The dash pad looks really good. Someday I will have to tackle that.

Today, I sandblasted the surface rust in the trunk. I lifted the pad at the last race and was shocked to see it. Not going to let that get started. Need to go get the paint matched in the trunk for a rattle can but at least I got the rust out and some primer down.
