I know that the key from my buddies 73 works in mine both doors and ignition.....only cause after 38 years its only a bumpy metal stick. And all bumpy metal sticks look the same. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Welcome to the world of 914 and PO's that hand you a ring of keys of which none work! My ignition key is the only one that worked when I bought the car so I was spared the process of figuring that out.
I think I read there was about 40 keys total for these cars and some dealers have a drawer full they can try on your car. You can buy replacement switchs and keys- several on Ebay right now. The 914 had separate keys for ignition, doors, trunk, glove box, sort of like a valet set up. Screw that, Once you can get a working ignition key you can easily re-key the other locks by following the procedure on the Pelican parts tech site. If you decide to tackle the door re-key buy the plastic replaceable mechanism part prior (one per door), good time to replace as you have the handle off. Now you have one key that operates your 914! |

Talk to a locksmith and see if they can cut a key on site
or Remove steering wheel and column switch assemblies exposing the screws that hold the lock cylinder in. Remove those exposing the tumbler switch. Now you have to figure a slim tool to depress the column locking pawl. Tumbler switch won't come out unless it is depressed. Not easy, but it can be done or As above, but remove the entire steering column assembly. 4 alen head screws & one pinch bolt on shaft universal joint & take it to a locksmith or find a key that works |

The 914 had separate keys for ignition, doors, trunk, glove box, sort of like a valet set up. What? your car must have had a previous owner replacing door handles or ignition switch... originally they did not have 3+ keys they had 1 key that fit everything and a 2nd key that fit the doors/ignition, but wouldn't open the trunk-lock, glovebox-lock brant |
