At the Smart Racing/Jerry Wood's open house yesterday they had several really bad-ass cars and engines on display including a real 934, 935, 962, 908 chassis, 935 engines, 3.8L engine in the dyno, and a ridiculous '69 911 with a 996 carbon fiber body, 750hp, $60K sequential transmission, and lots of other stuff.

Anyway, in the lot with these other cars was a 914 that I thought was just another 914...that is until I saw the poster next to it that indicated that it was one of two 916's in the U.S. It was really cool...other than the puke brown plaid interior. The steel top with rain gutters was really nifty. Check out the pics.

Britian,

It was hard to stop drooling, so many great cars and stuff!

Do you remember where the guy said they build the doors for the white twin turbo rocket? I check Fabcar's site, but it doesn't look like they do the CF doors.

They couldn't have weighed 3lbs.

I think there are a couple more 916's here now.

1. Yellow pictured above
2. Metallic Blue in NorCal (on Ebay a couple years ago - didn't sell)
3. Metallic Blue in Hamilton County, IN - yup, here in the midwest...I haven't touched it yet.

are there more that anyone knows about?

The yellow 916 looks like the car that was featured in an old issue of Porsche and Volkswagon magazine, which later became European Car magazine. If so, it was in the Chandler collection at one time, along with a lot of other cool Porsches..

Whats his face at whats that place in Georgia has a 916 as well. I parked next to it a couple of years ago at the Amelia Island Concours. He actually drove it from Atlanta to Amelia Island and let it sit outside the whole weekend. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

George Hussey from Auto Atlanta. Isn't it for sale, for like a half mil or something? What years were the 916s made, anyway? I can't remember right off hand.

Not to be a party pooper. But doesn't the passenger side rocker panel seem caved in just under the door?

I'm glad to see the yellow 916 is back in the US. I know Otis Chandler owned it for a period of time. More recently it has been living in Japan as part of the Matsuda Collection. Also I believe AA's 916 (ex-Peter Gregg) was the only 916 that was imported to America in 1971. I believe over time, 3 or 4 others ended up here.

I remember the blue one that was for sale in the UK. The guy selling posted on here. It was a very interesting thread. I notice that the 916 pictured has an adjustable passenger seat. Did all 916s have that? 1971 still had the fixed seat, did it not?

that's because all 916s were build in '72 and *not* '71 ! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

also, there were 11, not 10 like it says on that placecard ...

Seanery,

I know that Jerry Leonard's widow was selling his old gemini blue 916 a few years ago. I be honest with you, I just assumed that the blue 916 in California was his old car.
