So as I prepare my 1973 914 1.7 for conversion, and have it stripped down, I found another number stamped in the rear luggage compartment floor right side near the tail light. This does not match the VIN's. Is this a chassis builder number that Karman assigned before the VW and Porsche Factories assigned the build VIN's?

The number stamped in the rear trunk is your chassis number. This number should also be listed on the Karman Plate in the front of the driver's door jamb along with the paint code.
