A truely sad day for all Dutch
Today movie maker, columnist and chain-smoker Theo van Gogh was murdered

He was known and feared for his strong critizism and his blunt and harsh statements that he spewed when ever he got the chance. Often shocking his "opponenents"
Van Gogh had a very stong opinion about the way muslims-funtamentalists suppress women and how they condem gays.

In an ultimate attempt to shut him up, he was brutally excecuted in Amsterdam this morning. He was shot 6 times and then a letter was pinned to his dead body with 2 knives

The killer was captured after a shoot-out with the police. He is an immigrant from Marocco and aparently a muslim-extremist.

Van Gogh paid the ultimate price for what he believed in the most: the freedom of speech

There are some parellels here with hitler. The french trusted him, the brits via chamberlin said peace in our time. even stalin signed a treaty with hilter. All believed in the fairy godmother, and that things would be ok, and no reason to risk war to stop hitler.

Yeah, but you conveniently forgot to mention how the American government innitially felt about Hitler (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

WWIII, WWIII, WWIII !!! I want to see nukes going off on a daily basis. I'd like to see at least 2/3 of this planets populace wiped off the face of the earth. I want complete CHAOS! Hah, Hah, Hah, Hah. Now that would be interesting! This planet is SOOO boooring. Petty squabbles, religious differences. I want civil unrest and a complete destruction of this planets monetary system. I'd like us to revert to a barter system, where money and gold are nothing but toilet paper and bullets. I want survivalists to rule this planet. Let the weak fall by the side of the road. Put your guns in your teeners boys and head for the hills. This planet is so overpopulated and screwed up. It needs to be downsized. Don't worry some will survive. It might take a while, but after the radioactive dust settles, this will be a better planet. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif)

Then again, I understood that only cockroaches would survive nuclear warfare, so what does that say about you if you live to tell (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Jeroen, let me express my condolences at your country’s loss of a popular voice. But the title ‘Dutch Democracy Compromised’ is misleading. The permissiveness of democracy encourages acts of anarchy and terrorism, so it is in fact a victory. This wouldn’t have happened there if Saddam was in power. If Hitler was running the US, he would have prevented the tragedy of 9/11.

And to both you and Andy: I am just a naive and provincial American, but a bit of a history buff who has visited both of your countries. I believe that their current political situations are better because of the meddlesome interference the US provided during the 20th century. If we are one tenth as successful bringing democracy with prosperity to Iraq as we did to Germany, the world will be a better place. If we can come to their defense from an ill mannered neighbor one tenth as well as we did Holland, the world will be a better place.

In the late 1930’s, Charles Lindburgh, an ardent Hitler supporter, campaigned against Roosevelt, who wanted to take us to war to back England. Would you two be better off today if the election had turned out differently?

These actions were not taken because we’re such nice guys, we were protecting our vested interests and homeland security. And we have screwed up as much as we have succeeded. Banana wars, Cuba, Vietnam, the Shah, yada yada.

I love this country. We can, and do, insult our own political system any way we want. But if you two want to do it, please take it to another BBS where you are not administrators and control the forum.

You break the deal you spin the wheel!

Will wampum once again be an acceptable bartering tool? Because I've been waiting a while for that to happen.

Well if you look at History we f'ed up bigtime listening to Monty in WW2 in attemping to free Holland. I understand they kinda starved that winter after Market Garden failed and suffered heavy reprisals. We were too busy fighting the Battle of the Bulge to help the Dutch that winter. Their freedom came much later although the town still celebrate the day they were freed from the Germans. I went to two celebrations this summer as they don't forget WW2 as we have.

As for freedom of speech on this board Howard, I feel everyone should have a forum for their thoughts here no matter what it is unless it becomes offensive to everyone. So far we have had only one person hit that wall.

I don't see the link with Fascism. In fact it seems more like a link the opposite way...

From Dictionary.com :

Fascism
A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

Particularly the last part.

Given the fact that the redest red states are also historically the most racist, and red states in general are the least accepting of minorities (particularly gays), I think that Seanery's map should pretty much be reversed.

It is true that the blue states have a little more regulation around stuff like emmissions and stuff. If you believe we should attack other nations to protect our future generations, surely you also have to believe it's worth taking steps to protect our environment for the same reasons.

Well - the Confederate states in the Civil war were:

Alabama
Arkansas
Florida
Georgia
Idaho
Louisiana
Mississippi
Missouri
North Carolina
Oklahoma
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas
Virginia

(source: http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb.html#state )

Which IIRC all just voted Republican.

Not to say that republican is the same as racist. But racism is awfully close to facism, and I think this clearly demonstrates that saying that democratic states are facist is clearly both currently and historically ignorant.

Remember the south was demolished after the war. The plantation owners were clearly outnumbered by carpetbaggers.
