All VW transmissions turn the wrong way and all/most cannot be modified to flip the differential.

Thanks guys, you have no idea how much your helping. I wish i could just leave a stick in it, but its for my father who cant push the clutch anymore and the car was his first "new car" in 1973, so the sentimental value is priceless. Im thinking of getting a 1995 outback FWD and just swapping everything over. Im in California so no A/C, just heat, and im going to use renegade hybrids in los veges for the liquid cooling. Thoughts or ideas?

You dont need that much cooling and that $$... AL Celica GTS radiator and fan shroud off of ebay.. a little fab... more than enough.. also other options!!

How much can you do vs. farming this out.. Next find out who your farming it out too!!

Im looking for the eayest way to get a automatic transmission into a 914, I am ok with using a different engine. I have heard of people using a Audi A4 2.8 auto FWD. Is there any outer ideas? I don't need a race car, just something to cruise in. So whats the best options if i have 10k to burn on the engine and trans?

.....My granny, would be proud!!

Ah well, that explains it better....if it's for your Dad maybe the Subie auto will be OK. That drive train will work pretty well, especially using the whole thing out of the same car. You KNOW it works well together because it's working now. I agree with Greg you really don't need that much cooling....the Renegade setup might be too much since it's designed for a V8 or high HP turbo 4. Do some searches...a Scirocco rad has also been used.

There are a lot of highly skilled people (unlike me) who could very easily do this conversion for you at a fair price. Maybe someone local will PM you who can help.

You've got a lot going on to do everything. Why not call Rennegade and discus the project with them? I am sure they are aware of the market for this type of setup.

^ Just an adapter plate and flex plate, axles, and shift linkage... I agree should be simple.

Computers4kids documented his old setup pretty well I think

Have you considered going electric?

Last time I heard, a complete conversion was right about $10K and that was years ago.

The batteries have gotten a lot better lately.

I read the audi auto thread.... Depending on what Dad wants... but if its the love of that old car... Just do the auto conversion and spend the rest on making sure the engine is in good shape.. Not sure where you live.. Send engine to Mc Mark or some one.. fix and or update to bring to current.. Slap in the auto.. enjoy the car.. Fastest easiest and probably comes closest to what Dad remembers most...

Both Audi and Subaru make engine/tranny combos that could be swapped into a 914. Keep in mind these are water cooled, so it's a little more than just putting an engine in.

Most donor vehicles newer than 2000 will have an Immobilizer and chipped key. In the case of the Audi, the immobilizer circuit is controlled by the dash cluster. In my conversion I swapped the cluster, ECU and steering column. Not for the beginner.

If you get an early 90's donor, you can just swap the ECU and TCU (tranny) and be done. Just find a front wheel drive automatic.

Can you get the shifter for the donor car? I haven't looked at it but you may need the wire harness for the trans.
