i was wondering what is the first thing to look for
i do not have turn signals or brake lights.

    wrong area to post these types of questions (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

    fuses, bulbs are a good place to start...do you have a volt meter and a Haynes or similar manual?

    Do you not have rear turn signals or all four turn signals? Are the wires hooked up? Gotta start with the simple stuff. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
