I've been installing a roll cage in Joe's -6 this week.
I've done some things differently than I ever did before because he plans to drive on the street and carry a passenger from time to time. Here are a few pics of the cage tacked in place. Attached image(s) |

Chris, lovely work. So that is the most practical cage for use on the street, with passengers? Let me know how easy it is to get in and out when you are finished, willya?

Looks great Chris! Did you fab everything? What tubing? May make re-sealing the back glass interesting.

QUOTE(9146986 @ Dec 9 2004, 09:12 PM) Did you fab everything? What tubing? I built it from scratch. The tubing is 1 1/2 x .120w for the main hoop because of the lack of proper diagonal bracing and .095w for the rest, all DOM. |

Allow me to show my stupidity............What's the purpose of the horizontal bar behind the seats? Is it just for mounting belts or is it structural?
If structural, why not go higher and not do the funky curves behind the seats? Sorry for the dumb questions, don't take them wrong, your work is awesome. Some nice tight fishmouths! |

QUOTE(larryp @ Dec 9 2004, 08:53 PM) So that is the most practical cage for use on the street, with passengers? A standard diagonal brace in the plane of the main hoop requires that the passenger seat be pushed nearly all the way forward and is uncomfortable for most passengers, to say the least. This eliminates that problem but is not be as strong in a rollover. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) I tried to compensate for the structural deficiency the best I could. The harness crossbar was quite a bit of work and required that I TIG weld 3 pieces together. I'm pretty well satisfied with the design. One bar I didn't do is a second door bar extending from the main hoop down to about midway on the existing door bar. This would make it more similar to Tony C's standard design, but I'm not convinced it is necessary (and I'm already overbudget). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) I already removed the cage and welded up the joints that I could. Joe is taking it home over the weekend to do most of the painting and I will finish the installation next week. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

It is bent to allow more room for the seat to be pushed back. The height is determined by the proper angle of the belts relative to the occupants' shoulders. I cope the tubes in my Bridgeport with a 1 1/2" end mill. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
