I am surprised as well! I faithfully executed every recommended service item recommended prior to interval. However, I was never told about the water pump maintenance issue. Would have gladly replaced a WP w
vs an engine!

I hear this every single day, multiple times per day. It always comes from the guys that have failures, and trust me, most of them would trade scenarios with you very happily.

There are lots of reasons why the factory maintenance regimens include what they do, and what they do not. Remember, the IMS Bearing was supposed to be impossible to replace as well, and it also has no factory service interval either. That one found Porsche in a class action suit.

Proactive replacement of the water pump has proven to prevent reactive measures.

While that engine is out, retrofit the IMS Bearing. After all it is a 2003, and has a single row IMSB, and is a class vehicle.

Jake

I replaced the IMS two years ago because of the horror stories I heard. I didn't hear anything about the water pump until now :-(

James

Yep. Bet it gets more coverage in the future. It certainly should.

It probably won't get the exposure it deserves until all the folks that have had intermix issues organize a class action suit. That seems to be the only damn thing thats effective at getting attention for these issues.

Well I heard from the dealer today. The head is cracked in the exhaust area and this shop says not repairable! Thus it looks like a new head and having the other head refurbished. Not cheap but good news. Talking to Jake and Len re heads.

Any ideas what I should do "while I an in there"!!!!

Wish me luck

James

That's the rarest of all M96/97 cracks. We can repair it, but it's cost prohibitive.

I knew my car was special (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) anything else I should look at replacing. I was thinking of the plastic chain rails. Would replace a clutch? I have about 50k on the current one.

Seems like a prudent time to do the nylon chain tensioner rails. On my Mustang, the motor had 120k on it and they were pretty worn out. Definitely don't want them to go down to metal or get brittle and crack.

How about seals on everything that's fairly easy to get to? Seems like one of those "while I'm in there" things?

Coolant tank. Easy job with engine out. Otherwise, it can be an awful job if you don't plan ahead. You'll want to push your car off a cliff, new heads and all. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hissyfit.gif) ™

Just curious... Anyone in the Bay Area available to help me with my project?

Send me a PM. Trying to determine my options.

Take that car away from where it is.. I know an "enthusiast" that has built his own M96 and is sharper than most technicians on these engines. I am sure he'd be happy to help you and he is in the bay area. I can hook the two of you up.

Jake, Thanks an intro would be nice.

The engine has already been pulled. I will need help putting a new/rebuilt head on and installing the engine. I have been told I will need special tools but don't know what they are.

I will in all probability have the car towed home within the next week. I need to replace some transmission seals on the 914 this week.

Regards

James

The person I was referring to had the tools you need when he built his own engine. I am pretty sure that he still has them. If not I know a jerk who has them and will let you borrow them. He is the kind of guy that will do anything for you if he likes you, but if he doesn't like you, he won't do a damn thing for you:-)

I found you two different heads, Len needs to pressure test them when we get back from winter shutdown.

Figured this would be a good place to also say congrats to Jake and Len for their recognition in Panorama this month. The article about Charles' car probably put a lot of typical PCA folks to sleep, but I thought it was really interesting. Very technical and very insightful. Congrats boys!
