Rob,

Are you saying we should go east to Lodi rather than farther south to someplace else on I-5? Sounds like you know way more than me about the area. I'm kinda flying blind. Guy on phone at Microtel said several fast food joints and a couple of "sit down" restraurants there. Is he shining me on?

If you zoom in on the map, there is an "A" for Microtel, the address says I5 and Hwy 12, but it looks like the map is quite wrong from what you've described.

I guess we'll wait until there is an official decision on a place to stay.

As you move further south we can offer assistance in the Modesto area. We're on the trouble call list or send me a PM if you want phones numbers etc. Have a few spare parts as well as tools.

We're heading out Friday AM. Debating on taking the truck/trailer combo over to 101 to join the caravan. We may chicken out and just drive down 5.

Ok, I have done some more motel shopping. Seventeen miles south of the Microtel are a bunch of motels (north Stockton). Some (Super 8) are full. The Comfort Inn and the LaQuinta Inn have rooms. If you book online the rates are about $70 plus tax for 2 people/2 beds. I am ready to cancel the reservation Craig and I have if others can get rooms in Stockton. Kevin, Dan, Rich let me know what you guys are doing.
Do a google search: "Stockton CA motel". Click on "Super 8 Motel". A list of close by motels will be in the right margin. Go to either LaQuinta or Comfort Inn. You will be asked to choose a "preferred booking provider". The best rates are through Expedia. However, when booking on line at the lower rates you may not get your money back if you cancel.
Post here if you get a room and where. Maybe we can all be at the same freeway exit, if not the same motel.

Experienced tow'ers, what speed do you typically travel? What's your gas range? I spoke to Chris who may drive a very thirsty 454 truck. It depends on gas tank volume but he thinks he may be stopping frequently to gas up. Some will try to make a dash to Camarillo.
The question is what is the MPH we should try to maintain to accomodate a caravan?

At least we'll be the most 914's starting at Gilroy!

California requires all vehicles pulling trailers to travel at 55mph in the right hand lane.

Good safety point but you know that will separate anyone not willing to drive 55 and thin out the caravan...

That reminds me of the caravans last year around WCC to and from the different events.
I think the the person leading the caravan should take into consideration everyone that is in the caranvan, not everyone knows the way so why loose people in the back, or what about those who don't drive as fast, why not slow down and keep the group together.

A friend of mine who lives in Gilroy said In-N-Out Burger's lot is not very large. We may want to move it to McDonalds which shares the large Outlet Mall parking. People towing need lots of space to manuver...

definitely in the plans...

Mike,
Any place we can stop in Santa Barbara for a quick photo shoot for ~25 914's? How about a stop for the basics: bathrooms and gas?
