Damn, I couldn't find this thread so I posted on the "wrong" nw thread!

Oh well, once more:

Used mapquest for the following times/distances:

Wilsonville, OR (just south of Portland on I-5, good rendevous spot) to Sacramento is 563 miles, 8.5 hours drive time. With stops figure at least 10 hours. We could leave at 8am and make Sacramento by about 6. Could wait a little later for the Puget area folks and arrive later.

Sac. to Camarillo is 406 miles/6 hours. Leave Sacramento at 8am and make destination abut 3. Good to avoid freeways in So.Cal after 3.

93 miles to Camarillo on Sunday. That puts us 365 miles/5.5 hours back to Sacramento. If we stay for festivities we won't leave until 5pm. Probably want to stop short of Sacramento and make a harder push north on Tuesday.

This is not a scenic tour. Those who want that need to allow one more day for the drive south.

just ideas. i'd like to push for the southern side of stockton. i imagine commute hours are crappy in sac too. so we have to time that. a little more grief on the first long day, but a nice jump on cutting the drive time day 2. l

Your butt/legs may be thinking differently after 700 miles, Tacoma/Sacramento. I have been through Sacramento on I-5 many times during evening rush and it is not bad at all. Since I don't think reservations will be made, we can probably just go until we think it's time to stop. I'm guessing that Sacramento will be enough.

So what day do think you'll be in Sac town??

I'm 45 minutes West....still not sure when us Nor-Cal people are heading on down there.....????

I'm glad I'm not going to be the only one with a small bladder on this trip!

I'm starting to get excited about this trip! I think it will be a blast. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif)

it's really fun. 3 cars in the middle of no where get looks. a couple from canada will make a clutch of 7 and folks will be all looking hard. we can make the gas jockeys in oregon sweat. you CAN NOT legally pump your own gas. will pat(?) the attorney from seattle be joining us? i saw he was signed up.

Kevin, you mean Brad Kogut (?) with the silver car I think. Craig says he is coming.

Mike, I think Kevin is optimistic. Sacramento by 6 will be earliest in my opinion. Check the other "northwest" thread. Jeff Bowlsby is talking of a merging of the teens on Friday am somewhere down there for a drive on 101 instead of 5. That would be the best plan in my opinion.

it may only take 58 minutes past the hour of 5pm. i'm an optimist. if we limit our selves to one cup of coffee in the am. brad, right. if everyone is there at 7 we'll be across the california state line in no time.

Just wanted to offer a pit stop if needed. Bakersfield will be the last place for any needed repairs or maintenance before you make the climb over the grapevine. I have access to tools and a lift if anyone is in need.

Now that you mention it, start time is a factor isn't it. I figure 10 hours, start Portland end Sacramento. You are leaving Tacoma that morning, right? Leave Portland at 7, you have to be on the road by 5 at the latest, the urban sophisticates from Seattle by 4. We could leave Portland at 9 and make Sac by 7 which is a fashionable hour for dinner.

edit: oops, forgot, Grapevine. At least I won't boil over (does oil bubble out?) ! If we go 101 we miss that little hill.

i have to be in the car and rolling at 4:30, full tank, to time pland right and that's cutting it close. i make pretty good time south of olympia. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/driving.gif) that's why i mentioned that rich needed to roll VERY early. he has to contend with seattle too. with other folks rolling through wa on wed i'm more inclined to leave that day too. that way i can put some seats in at camp in the afternoon. Hey Kevin, just remembered, one of those times through Sacramento at evening rush was towing your car! Summer of '02 I think, or was it '03? How long has it been? I hope your avatar is not the current condition of your car. If so, you (like me) are spending too much time on the computer and not enough in the garage.

Uhhh, on 101 you will deal with a couple of grades in the SLO and SB area.

Not quite as long and steep as the Grape, but a heater too!

There is a nice scenic route about 17 miles south of Bakersfield (Hwy. 166) that will take you to 101 at Santa Maria if you don't want to take the Grapevine.

Thanks, avoiding the Grapevine isn't the first priority.
Want to avoid the long boring fast I-5 stretch from Sacramento to the Grapevine.
Where could a caravan from Portland and points north hook up with the Bay Area folks and then take 101 to Camarillo.
We can make Sacramento or a bit farther on Thursday. Want to meet the NoCal guys early Friday for caravan south.

You could take 80-680-101 from Sac and meet up with us in San Jose. Watch out for bay area traffic.

WCC05 Caravan – Last Leg

Highway 1 along the coast is not the road for our caravan to take. It’s a motorhome nightmare. Hwy 101 and Hwy 1 join at San Luis Obispo at the coast but from there south it’s a great road all the way to Camarillo.

Here is one idea using yahoomaps data:

Thursday
Portland to Elk Grove - 600 miles, 9+ hours plus stops
Suggest you go to Elk Grove, (30-40 minutes south of Sacramento)
To avoid Friday morning Sacramento traffic and get cheaper hotel rates

Friday
8:00am Depart Elk Grove for Gilroy - 130 miles, 2.0 hours
Crossover from I-5 to Hwy 101 at Hwy 152 (just south of Santa Nella)

10:00am Gilroy - 914Club PNW and Bay Area Region rendezvous

10:30am Depart Gilroy on Hwy 101 for Camarillo - 302 miles, 5 hours
add 1 hour for lunch/pit stops
Lunch around King City

4:30pm Arrive in Camarillo
