Ok, I think I have figured out who to ask. Here is the list of those traveling from the far north.

rhodyguy (Kevin) and ablose58 (Alan)- driving a 914
boxstr (Craig)- towing a 914
dinomium (Dino)- driving a 914???
korijo (Dave)- driving van???
mike_the_man- driving an Audi with 2 riders
pisces914 (Brad)- driving a 914
rdauenhauer (Rich) -driving a 914???
porsche rescue (me) -driving a 914

The above group will meet about 8 am Thurs. 4/21 at the Sweetbrier Inn parking lot, I-5, exit 289.

Will each of the above drivers pick their preferred route for Fri. am, beginning somewhere south of Sacramento:

Edit: We will sleep at the Microtel, CA highway 12 (Lodi) exit from I-5. leaving at 7:30 am friday to make the In N Out in Gilroy by 10 am.

1. Cross west to 101 on highway 152 (see map earlier in this thread) and meet the No. CA caravan in Gilroy at about 10 am for the drive to Camarillo.

Edit: Option 1 above is the winner. Forget 2 below

2. Drive about 200 miles further south on I-5 and cross west to 101 on highways 41/46, meeting them in Paso Robles at about 1 pm.

In either case we should arrive in time for the opening social in Camarillo.

The route home for us will likely be I-5 since we will be leaving from Lancaster, not Camarillo.

Registered voters listed above reply to this thread with your vote, route 1 or route 2.

C'mon Kevin, vote. The "bayers" can't plan until we tell them where we will meet them. They left the choice to us: Gilroy or Paso Robles (see Felix's post above).
As usual, Craig is ahead of the game. I think he voted before I printed the ballot.

Okay, so I am voting for route #1. And I count 11 people, so I will try for a group rate at the Doubletree in Sacramento. I don't wan to hear any of this lets keep going as we pull in Thursday evening.
Do you think they will have one room big enough for 11 people??

the gilroy route may pose a problem as i have no foglights. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) as long as we COMPLETELY avoid the bay area, #1 is fine with me. rooms for 2 are prefered unless you are planning some kind of orgy. We just need to identify an exact location and time to link up. The Friday schedule can't vary that much in order to be in Camarillo by 4 PM. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)
We'll exchange a couple of cell numbers to inform each other of any delays that day. Once we're one big pack, we'll "own" the highway. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

Kevin I guess you will have to stay at home since you don't have foglights. We will bring back pics. Maybe next year. See ya. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif)

Fog in the Sacramento valley is 100X worse than fog in the bay area. Contrary to popular belief, most of the bay area receives very little fog, but Sacramento and surrounding areas can get very heavy fog.

So if there is going to be fog, you will be in it as you leave Sacramento on 5 South. But don't worry - you don't need fog lights. Most people don't have them.

And yes, #1 does completely avoid the Bay Area.

Final tally not in yet, but it looks like we cross to Gilroy on 152.

Here are the distances/drive times (add stops for food/restroom/gas)

Tualatin, OR to Sacramento 567 miles, 8.5 hours
Leave at 8am we should be there by 6pm

Sac. to Gilroy 177 miles, 2.5 hours
Leave at 7 am to be there by 10am

We might go farther on Thursday. I have been checking for motels but there are no towns on I-5 I can identify from the map. We could go to Lodi (I will bring the CCR cd) which is 8 miles east of I-5. I have located a Best Western there with 2-bed rooms for $77 "most tax included". They have a free continental breakfast.

It is 609 miles, 9.25 hours to Lodi, we'd get in about 7 pm,then 123 miles, 2 hrs, to Gilroy on Friday.

There are probably motels at the I-5 off ramps, but we would take what ever we find and pay whatever they charge.

If you are thinking about Lodi, you might just as well make it to Stockton. Lodi is over on Highway 99 and Stockton is still on I-5. The distance to either would seem about the same and Stockton-town is probably mo' better.

If y'all are coming over 152 to Gilroy and all we need is a place to stage from I propose the In N Out Burger at the corner of 152 and 101. It is easy to find, and they do not open until 10:30am so their parking lot should be able to hold ~30 cars without trouble.

The address is: 641 Leavesley Rd., Gilroy, CA

Here is a map:

So I just calculated what time I should leave my house in San Jose to meet the 914 Train at 10:00am in Gilroy. 09:14am Yippeee! (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

This map has a bit better context...offramps...you can see that the In N Out is surrounded by factory outlet malls...so there should be gas nearby and other things if needed...

After more careful review...the map may be confusing because it marks the same road as both 101 and 152. The red two lane road is 101 going North-South. Leavesley Road= Hwy 152 trqavels East-West. The map is shown with North towards the top of the map.

OK, northerners, scratch Lodi (but I'm still bringin' CCR)!

Found a motel on I-5, Microtel, (Lodi, N. Stockton) They say there are a couple of sit- down restaurants and several fast food outlets nearby.

We will drive 600 miles and get in about 7pm with good luck.

Two-bed room $70 plus tax. To get that rate you must book through central reservations at 1-800-771-7171 or online at www.microtelinn.com, select Lodi, CA and look for their "spring fling rate". Craig and I have a room reserved.

That will leave approximately 120 miles, the first 80 on I-5, to make it to Gilroy and meet the group at the In N Out about 10 am on Friday, April 22.

To review:

Depart Tualatin, OR 8:00 am April 21

Drive 600 miles to Microtel on I-5 near Stockton

Depart Microtel at 7:30 am April 22

Drive 120 miles to Gilroy

From that point we follow the lead of the natives

Getting ahead of myself as usual, but we may want to revisit the Microtel Inn on the way home. It appears to be about 325 miles from the track back to the I-5/Lodi exit. Mapquest says 5.5 hours. If we stay until the Farewell meet, we might get there by 10pm with a real short dinner stop. That would leave the same 600 mile leg for Tuesday return to Portland. WA guys would have additional opportunity to bond with their 914's.

forget that stockton crap jeff. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif) i think that was the first thing i suggested in this thread (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) . i do not trust those drive times at all. if we leave sac at 7am i'll lay odds that we hit junk traffic, unless you want to get up at 5. i'd rather drive a bit further thurs and be able to relax on the run to gilroy. if we try to drive through sac at 6pm, we could be hosed too. i don't care.
