OK, here is the deal. I just spoke to Steve from www.aircooledracing.com he is the present owner of the factory Max Moritz 914-6 GT car which now resides in PA.
After explaining to him what some of us are looking for in the way of a kit duplicating the mechanical headlights, he has told me he is willing to fabricate a kit based on the one that is on his GT. He said it should be able to reproduce it a reasonable price. His car was featured in this months Excellence, a great article with a lot of photos. As soon as I get more info on the kit I will post it. Check out his website its a great source for part for 914 & 911. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/aktion035.gif) |

Seriously, how many people want to do it?
I have mine 90% done and spend less than $200 on it. It does not look like the GT method because I did not want to cut anyting. Its stripped down simple. I dont have one length exact because the engine is out of the car and I need it level to make sure it within the limits of the headlight screws and Im not sure of the LBS rating is correct. ( I used 20lbs gas springs ) If there is some interest I will post pics/specs of the design.. -Rich Hilgersom |

hmmmm...I've got a few of these twin-chamber air-cylinders that could be used instead of a one way gas spring ....instead of using compressed air, vacuum from the engine can be used to open and close the headlights....as long as you have a good detent once opened/closed, you'd only have to supply vacuum to open or close it again
an accumulator can be installed in case the engine vacuum is too low due to an aggressive cam the block is 1"x2"x3" for size comparison (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) Attached image(s) ![]() |

Bimbas are great , pretty cheap to special order if they dont have the one you need on the shelf , also like you say up and down,
The factory way is cool if you want a factory type GT part. The modern approach will work even better, and cheaper. Good Job (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/beerchug.gif) |

Ha! If we were at Porsche 35 years ago some moron would say "Hey, we could run them off the spare tire!" (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif) I like your idea of using engine vac. These look super cool. How much do they weigh? -Ben M. |

FWIW, here's a picture of the parts I made for my car. 5 mm squares.
Not perfect, by any stretch, but they work: Attached image(s) ![]() |

The splitter. The threads did'nt come out straight, and I redid this part. I used 3/4 inch round aluminum stock.

I used ordinary bicylcle brake cables. The expensive part is the pair of gas springs. I mail-ordered these off the web.

The inside of the forward compartment has since been repainted.
Here's how it attaches to the headlights: Attached image(s) ![]() |

And how the hook looks in the car.
The way it works is this: the hook and the gas spring both engage the same special fitting on the headlight. The cables simply lift the hook so that the gas spring can do it's work and push the headlight open. The head light can only be shut by hand, from the outside: the hook is shaped such that pushing the headlight down will push the hook forward until it drops past the fitting on the headlight. The bucket has to be modified by adding a vertical slot inside the side support to let the hook through. Attached image(s) ![]() |

I see this is an old revived thread. I too have been talking to aircooled for well over a year and they keep saying they are gonna make them, I have finally given up on that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)
On an up note Armando Serrano called me last week and has found a couple complete kits in Europe that are waaay waaay spendy, but WTF, might as well go for it I can't find them anywhere else. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

how hard is each headlight to push down with those 2 gas shocks and where did you get the gas shocks?...and what's the part number and how much $$, thanks
I have a plan where I use the same shock set up as that, but instead of just a quick pull release, I can have a cable mechanism to pull the headlights down (still using a splitter like that) and then have it lock somewhere...maybe take a lawn mower pull start handle and connect it to the cable in the cock pit near your knees kinda and have it where you pull on that to close the lights and have it hook around something higher up on the dash...and to release the lights you just release the cable and let the shocks do the work |
