Here's a closeup of the shock. You can see the part number spd-gsni-5100-20 as well as the website www.spdhardware.com . I just looked it up and saw that it's 12 bucks, or so. My memory was off. You also need to get the proper end fittings, 4 of those.
The lights are quite easy to push down. Actually, if anything, mine sometime hesitate to come up, so a slightly stiffer spring may not be a bad idea. These do work, though. Attached image(s) ![]() |

and an overall photo of the finished product. This can all be done with a good bench vise, a hacksaw, a few files, the most basic welding equipment (it can probably be done with brazing) and some elbow grease. Actually, I made the splitter on my lathe. If you don't have one, something would have to be imagined.
Edit: actually, now that I think about it, the little fitting on which the forward end of the shock attaches, and on which the hook hooks, has to be turned on a lathe too. Both the parts that need to go on the lathe are pretty simple. I suspect that making parts that are nice enough to sell is much more expensive than just knocking something off in my basement. Plus there's the metal finishing, either zinc or paint or whatever, that involves significant cost. (I simply applied POR-15 on mine). HTH Attached image(s) ![]() |

looks like you got the 20lbs ones...I'll try the 30lbs ones and see what I can fab up!...also, by the way you designed it, you might be able to eliminate the hesitation by giving the shock more leverage...or just buy the 30lbs ones LOL

More leverage is the way I would start. A small gain might be made by better positionning of the fixed end so the shock is "squarer" (is that a word ?) to the lever on the light. The length of that lever is pretty much set, unless the hardware that carries the light is changed.
The other thing is reducing friction. The weather was pretty cold here when I had the car out, it may be that I should use lighter grease in the pivots. 30 lbs springs would probably work, but I'm not sure yet they're necessary. Once the lights are up with my setup, they're fine, I get no bounce. Michel |

would you recommend me getting 30lbs ones or would that be over kill?...with my design plans I am going to have to be able to pull and contract both shocks shut with my left arm and I'm a weak 17 year old kid lol

I think the 20 lbs are enough, with careful design and execution.

what were the part numbers of your mounting hardware and such!...like ball joints and end pieces...
because I found these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...4428&rd=1,1 which look identical to the SPD ones, thanks |

It completely baffles me why all of these kits require manually pushing the lights back down. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) It's not hard to build a push/pull cable system!!
I know... I need to shut up and build it then. Clearly they will come. |

if you would read...that's what I'M doing...
but I'm still going to use gas shocks to lift them and cables to pull them down...simply said |

bump, I got my gas shocks...will start modifying soon
mind posting a pic of how the gas shocks look when the headlight is closed so I can check you angle of the shock (which matters for leverage) also, where in the process of raising up does the headlight hesitate (cause you said the hesitate) you can change when that is by changing the angle I think I am trying to figure out the best place to mount the shock as I will have to be able to pull them both down at the same time yet still allow them to raise up |

Wow nice kit fellas! Me likes very much being of the original design and all. The kit I'm making won't be like the GT one and thus will not be for everyone.. Together, we might be able to please everyone who is looking for this kind of alternative and at the end of the day, thats what really matters for the brotha and sistahood yo. Zounds, I forgot. And then I'm away until next Wednesday. Maybe I'll try and go home over lunch time to take the picture. Sorry.
