Ok, drove home quick over lunch, snapped some pictures.

Here is the shock in the closed position. I think that I put the anchor point too low. It's at the start of the movement that it hesitates and improving the geometry at that point is probably all that's needed.
Mind you, I only had a problem when trying to raise the lights and the car was stationnary. As soon as I move, the slightest bump will get them on their way up.

if you would read...that's what I'M doing...

but I'm still going to use gas shocks to lift them and cables to pull them down...simply said

to bring 'em back down you'll need either a heck of a long pull or be pretty darn strong or have some tricky leverages....

I like the idea..hurry up and get it done (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smash.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Cams are good for that... Run the cable around a wheel with the right shape and pivot so it pulls with power first, then faster once past the point where the shocks aren't resisting as much to shorten the throw.

Cool stuff! I love seeing new projects.

kinda like a compound bow (and arrow lol) works?...which sucks because I understand the concept of using the pulley's but have never actually seen one long enough to understand how much and what shapes of pulleys affect it...so I think I'm going to mount the lights and shocks and see if I even need to make it easier or not...

I know for sure I want the shock to exert an equal or average force on the light throughout the lifting (to make the pull of the cable somewhat consistent)...to do it, I will measure in degrees using a protractor or something to find the exact mid point during the lifting...then mount the shock exactly perpindicular that when the light is half way open...and then erase everything I said because gravity has a lot to do with it...

or I can just mount it at a wee bit less of an angle than the one shown in the pics...tac it into place until it works like a charm and then finish the welds...

and then I can actually go buy a welder because I don't have one and have never done it and I can learn to weld after I finish my homework after soccer practice!!! haha

don't expect any results soon...I think it might take a while because I have little time and it's cold outside and my garage sucks...will post when I'm ready

ahh

suggestions?

Mounting the shock to have it perpendicular at mid-stroke is not the best strategy, IMHO. You should skew the squareness towards the early part of the stroke: at that point you have to overcome the starting friction and nothing is helping you. when you're at mid-stroke, there already is some momentum to the movement, and the friction in the mechanism is less, because it's moving.

My .02.

Just a quickie....tried the up/down headlight cable dohickymaggigiethingy.......no good and I am of average to ....well shit top 6% on the IQ scale....

I did however dick around with the factory GT headlight idea and made my own with very little $$$ and I used the hood shox's kit for FG hoods that craig sells and it works like a charm....I mean SMOOOOOOTH....anyway I will post the pics with the rest of my 914-6 conversion as soon as I compile them all....WOO HOO I am 2 weeks away from painting the unibody...finally!!

Anxious to see what you did. Mine are definitely on the slow side when getting up. Might change so stiffer air springs.
