Finally get around to fixing a pulled exhaust stud, get everything buttoned up, quick test drive. Back into the garage, check all of the exhaust nuts. Long test drive.
Runs OK for about half distance, then it sounds and feels like it's losing a cylinder. Thudding exhaust note and no power. Up a steep (unavoidable) hill, it starts what sounds like really loud ping under load. Goes away when I get off it, and stays away if I keep the speed down up the hill. CHT on No. 3 isn't higher than usual (about 340 up that hill, about 300 on the flat). Nearer the house, it idles OK, but doesn't pull away from a stop w/o a fair amount of clutch slip. No odd noises. Sigh. Haven't the time to pull everything apart to take a good look this weekend. This engine has been trouble from the word go. I've had maybe 50 trouble-free miles in the last 6 months. I'm beginning to think a Soob conversion isn't an option, but a requirement. No way I'm going to spend serious money on this engine... |

We feel your pain, cuz we've all felt our own. I've seen many of your responses, I know you'e a smart guy and can figure it out. Gotta be something simple - vacuum, ign timing, compression...?

If the dizzy spins... Check it, peep!
If anyone can empathize, it's me. Just do the standard thing, completely rebulid your motor each time it needs a valve adjustment. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) M |

Put a cover over it and stay away for a couple days. That's what I had to do. I even listed it for sale (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) I was pissed. Had a full weekend planned going on a wine tasting cruise with the Bro N law & his Boxster. Damn Punkin began running like shit right after I washed it.
Dug back into it the next week & found a bigassed bandaid to make it run good. Been running good ever since. Now that I said that it'll run shitty tomorrow (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif) .....b |

Distributor loose and spun too advanced.
I burned up a type I by not tightening the dizzy after a tune up. Put a hole in the piston. |

Good theory. Nearly new Mallory Unilite on this engine. It's clamped down pretty tight (can't move it by hand), but I haven't checked with a timing light to see if the advance is still where I set it (11d at idle, 32d at max).
It does get frustrating. It's never been the same problem twice, always something new. Car is cursed. |

Take the advance plate out for a lube job. Check the vac adv unit, and the trigger points while its out. Then FI harness and grounds. My FI had 3 terminals with green colored copper wire. You could hardly see it untill you loosened up the insulation clamp of the terminal to tug on the wire conection. One of mine fell off at this point. Check vac leaks hoses and MPS and Vac adv and ohm uut the TPS for the idle pos. Loose the points to Petronics. If you were having some noise issue it would not hurt to adj and check the valves and compression.

James is that Mallory a vacuum advance or mechanical…Jake has had the vacuum advance break or seize in full advance and won’t use them.
If it is a vacuum I think you can remove the vacuum bits. |

It's mechanical, no vac. The PO had fitted carbs with an 009, and I got the Mallory to try to reduce one potential source of problems. Right now, I'm in the "ignore the car for a bit" stage.

How new are the spark plug wires? How about the coil? Nice bright blue spark if you pull a plug?
