Anything you can do to save a Porsche has to be positive. Even a 924.

Driven the 924's, 924S's and been in a 924GTS. I love the idea of installing a 1.8T with a chip to get 215hp or chip and a k04 turbo to get 245hp. Thats in the range of the 924GTS for not much money! The rest would be suspension parts and a body kit. Cheap 9254GTS clone.
Love this car here. Attached image(s) |

well, i guess i should say something here...
i have had a 944, 924s and an 81 924. I got the 924 for 300 usd and had every intent of making it a track car. I put 450usd in fuel pumps in the thing + some other stuff to get it running. With the bursch header and tune up i did, the car was a rocket. Before i got to get too involved i ended up getting my 924s and the teener. My advise, if it is decent and your not going to try to make it a 944 or something, they can be fun cars much like the teener. They handle great with little effort. Doing much like swapping wheel lug patterns, brakes etc can add up fast and youd be better off buying a 944 or an "s" right off the bat. I do like them though, mine was kinda rough..a dog had been living in it. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/unsure.gif) |

Having owned a $250 924, i bestow upon you my knowledge...
DO NOT get involved. Unless you have nearly $10,000 and 7 years to invest into one, avoid it like the plague. Finish your Shlalom first, then move on to a 924. They do have a lighter body in comparison to the 944. They are only PVC coated on the undercairrage (looming rust problems) and the little 2.0 L engine that was in them was very anemic. As mentioned, only good thing is a 924S (944 engine in 924 body) or doing a V8/V6 conversion. Other than that, they're worthless. A 931 on the other hand... if you can find the "unobtainium" parts, would be a VERY fun little highway hopper. |

a non-S 924 or 924 turbo is a non interference motor. broken timing belts do not ruin the motor no special tool is needed to change the rubber timing belt. (I've done this job on a turbo myself) |

Just thought add a few things and clear up some misinformation. The engine is a VW medium truck engine, and bears NO resemblance to the Rabbit/Scirocco engine. The only parts I can think of that are the same are the timing belt, the tensioner, and the oil filter. This engine is based on the old Audi 100LS block, which was pushrod, and has a crossflow OHC head. It is notoriously prone to getting flat cam lobes. MAJOR dollars to replace the cam and lifters. They suffer from an unpleasant vibration problem like most larger displacement motors. They eat rear mainshaft bearings in the 4 speed trannies, and the 79-80 908 style "snail" trannies are absolute junk. Door hinges are another known problem ........ they come off the body, causing the doors to fall off. The plastic dash stuff squeeks, groans, and rattles. The rest of the interior isn't all that much better. 931s eat turbos, routinely break exhaust hardware, and are widely accepted to be money pits of epic proportions. A great many of those were sold with 4 bolt suspensions, just like the 924s. Later 924s were available with the 5 bolt "sport" suspension package. 924s handle well out of the box, and can be easily and inexpensively improved. They have a very low C/D, and get pretty good fuel mileage. All in all, I'd rather have a series 1 GTi.

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/agree.gif) As someone who has been working on 924's for several years and still drive one EVERY day, Krust is right on. If the car needs nothing major it is a lot of fun. I installed 944 suspension with urethane bushings and GREATLY improved the feel of the car. The bottom end is bulletproof, the top end is not an issue with broken belts but is a major issue with head gaskets, and performance. A lot of head work can get you an extra 15-20 hp. If you buy the car go with a Bursch header, K&N intake and some quality plug wires. Bosch platinums are really good in these.Power wise I would compare it too a slighly modified 2.0 914, PITA wise later cars rarely rust bad, suroof always leaks, rear hatch seperates from frame and........leaks (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) , but it is a fun car. My 82 is for sale for $1500 !!!!!!

That car is in the Netherlands... which is about just as rainey as Seatle I guess (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/laugh.gif) The car is from a friend of mine and I took Geoff for a ride in it It's a GT (not a GTS). Think about it, it made a good, reliable 210bhp back in 1981! Awesome car and performance, specially for that time The regular 924 has a bit of a soap for soar eyes look these days, with it's weird skinny tires and narrow bodywork (sound familiar, huh (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif)) But back in the days, it definatly had the best bang for buck. Faster than a VW GTI as about the same price and it could handle the speed (which the GTI couldn't). Don't let anyone ever tell you it's got an Audi or a VW engine though, cause it does not... A lot of BS. Only the engine's main casing is from Audi The 924S is a narrowbody version of a 944. Porsche claimed it had a 150bhp engine (the 944 made 164bhp), but that's sales BS Same friggin' engine and the car has a higher top speed because it has less aerodynamic drag (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) My dad's first P-car was a 924. And back then, it was cool as ....! He also had a 924 turbo. Nasty turbo-lag, but when it kicked in at 3500rmp. Whoooo-hooooo (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) The 924 is no where near as fun as a 914 though. It feels heavy and sluggish and it will pretty much scrape the doorhandles over the tarmac in a corner. They are the most underrated p-car out there, and that's sad. They were fabulous cars for their time. Very hard to find a nice and decent example... |

Sorry, Jeroen, but the engine in a 924 IS a VW engine, specifically from an LT series light truck/van. At least that's what VW says. The Cap'n

There is a 924S that runs in our GT AX class that kicks our 914 ass when he runs. Very fast.

I would've sworn the first few 924 photos I saw showed the Audi four-ring logo cast into the intake plenum. |

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif) yea, that same ring is on allot of stock VW ware--they were VW's prototyper business--I worked on quite a few 80's audi's and man--well--they were a mess and i'll just leave it at that---Ok--I'll just say two words--: " Mineral Oil " Later models are really good--and the latest from about 1998 and up are really good----- VW/Audi is just like ford and GM--shared platforms--shared engines, etc..... |

That's what Porsche started out with... (the 924 was never supposed to be a Porsche, they were commissioned by VW to build a successor to the Scirocco, but VW bailed out) But Porsche redesigned/engineered most, if not all, internals on the engine I don't know the specific details, but my friend, who is a watercooled-4-cilinder-porsche guru, independent P-shop owner/mechanic and owner of the CGT pictured above told me so, so that's what I'm sticking too (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif) |
