I noted this in my first post. I looked around the interwebs and found a couple instances with the same issue.
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i237.photobucket.com-17475-1404454607.1.jpg) Note that it appears that the engine number appears to have six digits instead of 7. I'm not sure of the significance of this, if any. I'm only basing the 7 digits on these guides: http://www.p914.com/p914_vin.htm http://www.bigporsche.com/history914w.htm And I did find this similar thread but no real resolution: http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?show...p;#entry1005459 Or is it a remanufactured engine and I'll see that mark if I clean off more gunk? |

Looking at it it appears there might be an 8 after the 9....or are my old eyes foolin' with me?

The thing after the last nine looks like a circle, just like this engine number:
(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/post-10419-1323129395.jpg) Notice it's also six numbers, not seven. I believe two letters followed by six numbers is the norm. |

Then why do the engine number links I provided say 7 numbers? I suspect that at one point the process to stamp a replacement block was to truncate the number by one number. Where did that picture come from? Is it your car? |

Closeup of the full serial number. Clear VW stamp at the end. Not the remanufactured symbol I've also seen. Perhaps this is the earlier version? |

Where did that picture come from? Is it your car? * I don't know why the links show 7 numbers. Check out these links to COAs from a bunch of 4 cylinder cars. Engine serials are all 6 digits: https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4722918725.jpg https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4732926371.jpg - Steve Gaglione's car https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4742901465.jpg https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4742902768.jpg https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4742920436.JPG https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4742909456.jpg https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4742910631.jpg https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4742920436.JPG https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4752904748.jpg https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/zCOA4762900990.jpg * The picture I posted previously came from another thread. It is not from my car. Here is the engine serial for my car. You're correct about the VW stamp after the last digit: |

Just spot checking the Database and I didn't find one engine number listed.
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=membervins I'm hoping one of the mods can view all the entries and if there are any engine numbers available. |

With a tip from SirAndy I can find the entries with engine numbers. Interestingly all of the EA series engines that I found had six digits while it varies with other engines.

Did you find a picture of an engine number (any type IV) that's 7 digits?
