I noted this in my first post. I looked around the interwebs and found a couple instances with the same issue.



Note that it appears that the engine number appears to have six digits instead of 7. I'm not sure of the significance of this, if any.

I'm only basing the 7 digits on these guides:

There is an 8 after the 9

The thing after the last nine looks like a circle, just like this engine number:



Notice it's also six numbers, not seven. I believe two letters followed by six numbers is the norm.

Then why do the engine number links I provided say 7 numbers?

I suspect that at one point the process to stamp a replacement block was to truncate the number by one number.

Where did that picture come from? Is it your car?

Closeup of the full serial number. Clear VW stamp at the end. Not the remanufactured symbol I've also seen. Perhaps this is the earlier version?

Your picture 'leaves' me wondering

With a tip from SirAndy I can find the entries with engine numbers. Interestingly all of the EA series engines that I found had six digits while it varies with other engines.

Did you find a picture of an engine number (any type IV) that's 7 digits?
