When my car broke down at parade I had AAA tow it home, the tow truck had these straps he used with a normal ratchet strap tie down that turned it into a wheel tie down.

When I got home I searched for the straps, the driver didn't speak very good English, if your thinking... Why didn't he just ask the tow truck driver....couldn't find them.

Finally talked to a guy who owns a tow company.....found the straps.

They are axle straps with loop ends, the with loop ends was the hard part, most are made with metal D ring ends, with the soft loop ends they won't damage your rims.

You just thread the ratchet strap end through one loop end then put it behind the tire then back through the other loop end, then hook each end and tighten, clamps around the tire....no more crawling under the car....no more cutting straps going through the wheels. Makes me want to trailer my car somewhere. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

Now I just need to weld a few D rings on the trailer. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png)

I see motorhomes flat towing cars all the time, I think if the towed vehicle is registered and you have working tail lights your good.

To be totally legal, you also need an auxiliary braking system on the vehicle being towed. The weight at which that system is needed varies a little from state to state.

California law specifically requires brakes on any trailer over 1500 lbs.
There is no actual requirement for vehicles being towed.

Something light (like a 914) behind something big & heavy with good brake (like an RV or big truck) I would be OK with but something heavy (like my Audi A6) I would want aux brakes on it.
