Best "bang for the buck" is whatever you are most familiar with and have good access to parts.
There are currently more alternate powerplants being put into 914s on this forum than any other forum I frequent. Ferrari, Maserati, VAG (bunch of stuff including 1000+ Hp cars), GM, Subaru (lots both 4 and 6) Porsche 6 (both air and water cooled). Blown Hayabusa!!! Multiple electrics... One VAG that might be possible is a Bentley W12! Subie or AC Porsche 6 will be the easiest in my book. The "path" has already been charted by others. Sky's the limit! Get creative... If you don't have the "Have to build it myself" affliction and tons of tools and equipment the best "bang for the buck" is something like this...
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...376264&st=0 I'd bet I couldn't build that for 35K today in parts and sublet work starting with a decent car that wasn't included in the budget. Watch the classifieds, a documented build almost never brings back what it actually cost to do... Tygaboy once listed the LS3 car for a "sub-cost" price. And it didn't sell! |

Years ago considered putting an aircooled 6 in, but lost interest and not sure if it's a viable option anymore. It was a Corvair 6.
Not sure how easy it would be to find a reverse rotation camshaft these days (stock Corvair motors turn the wrong direction in a 914), but you can modify type 1 cylinders to work if the stock ones are out of tolerance and they do have a flat fan configuration. Dr. Evil put one in his bus. The benefits Include that your 914 would remain air-cooled and have more HPs, but then running a Chevy (!) motor in a Porsche would hurt those with tender feelings (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

I bought the 3.2 in my narrow body car for $4500. It was rebuilt by the PO. At the time, I thought it was expensive for an engine. I also had to buy a new aluminum fan shroud since the stock mag one had cracked. Another $500.
The thing is, Porsche parts seem to hold their value or increase. I’ve never regretted buying Fuchs for that same reason. The killer for a Porsche engine is if/when it needs a rebuild. There’s no way to do it cheap. But the sixes are very special engines and nothing compares to a Porsche engine in a Porsche chassis. The Corvair engine conversion fell out of favor at least 10 years ago. Again, if that’s your passion, go for it. But they are few and far between these days. |
