I recently purchased a 1971 914/4. I'm interested to know how the chassis number and the engine number correlate. vin # is 4712912864 and the engine # appears to be W0107102. The colour code is L21E. Car is most definitely Tangerine....I kinda like it.
If any one could shed some light it would be most appreciated as I plan to completely dismantle the car and restore it to factory original specs. Thank you Adrian adrianfewing@hotmail.com |

Hi Adrian,
The only way to find out if it's numbers matching, is to contact Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) from the Porsche website's Classic section under Certificate of Authenticity, then call &/or send the form & fee for a COA with your VIN & Engine & chassis #'s. If you have the original window sticker &/or dealer invoice when new, then you can send a copy along & IIRC you get a discount for the former - & they are less likely to screw it up with PCNA's errors. If you're a PCA member, then they also get a discount on the COA. To decode the chassis # - Look on your VIN sticker in the rear driver's door jamb for the date & get that year's calendar online, then use the Chassis # on the Karmann Plate in the front door jamb with the paint code (in the top box) to get the build date of the chassis.... Chassis No.: XXY95ZZ XX = week in year - use the calendar above to count weeks .... starting with week #1 even if only 1/1 Y = Day of Work Week 1-5 = M-F 95 = Karmann Plant > 96 or 97 would add 100 or 200 to car # @ ZZ ZZ + Car # built that day The VIN sticker is the Month/Year it rolled out complete for US-DOT importation (same for USA built cars) Google for the PPG Paint Chip Library, since they keep them for the VW & Porsche Cars, & L21E is a VW paint code used on 914/4's so would be the same color either way. IIRC they also have a section for the paint mixtures too. Use Jeff Bowlsby's 914 website & p914.com & 914 info on here at the top + the Originality & History Forum here as research resources, so ytou know how to do it correct - since that's what you said you wanted. http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/ http://p914.com/ http://www.914world.com/specs/914info.php PS - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Good Luck!
