I ADDED A PHOTO OF MY "NEW" CAR. SCROLL DOWN ABOUT 15 POSTS...
After 4 years of searching I just bought a 914-6 with a 3.2 and flares! The car is in route from California to SC, should have it in a few days! I can't wait. My first car (1981) was a 1971 1.7, then a 2.0, have always wanted a -6 The car is going to need tires soon, it has 15x7 and 15x8 rims. The suspension is very stiff and the frame is stiffened (with dog ear stiffeners). I'll use it for AX, PCA events, running around town, AND JUST HAVING FUN. I was hoping to get new 285's to replace the 285's on the rear but nobody makes them anymore. What do you guys recommend for tire type and size for this car??? Thanks for your help!!! |

I raced the car attached for three years with 15x7's and 15x8's. I ran 225's all the way around. I do not think you should run larger than 255's on an 8 inch rim.

On a Chevy, with a 17" rim that is 8.5" wide, the maximum recommended is a 275, although people were running 285's on a regular basis. Not sure if you can get away with the width though because of the rim being a smaller height therefore more sidewall though, so you can curve it in though.
I have 225's on mine, not sure of the rim width, I run like 20 PSI in my tires and have fun with it on the street. I don't take it to the track though. |

Check out www.bridgestone.com and look at the high performance Potenza wheel chart. 225/50R15 tires call for an approved rim width of 6-8 inches.

How the heck where they fitting 275 on a 8.5 in rim????
We talkin trucks here?? cus it would have to be a large diameter tire.. (275 70 17's or so..) Cus if I can fit like 265's on my 17's I would like it much betta... Andrew |

on the front 7" setup, I wouldn't exceed 235, on the rear, that can go up to 255. I'm forgetting the overall rolling diameter of a 914 wheel/tire combo so I'm not sure of the profiles that you should be going after.

Here is a size chart that should help with your choices.
I have 225 - 50 - 16's all the way around on 8" wheels on my flared 3.0 / 6. This set up seems to look and perform well for me. Congrats on the new car Ken. You're gonna love it. |

hoosiers for the track offer a 245 that will fit on a 8". I belive outside of slicks thats as big as your going to get. Otherwise you'll need 16"s..

I was just checking a Yokohama tire brochure. Their recommended maximum width tire for a 7" rim is 225 and for an 8" rim is 255.

i've got 225's on my 8's (front) and 255's on the 9's (rear), my next set of tires (those nice Falkens everyone is raving about) will be going on as soon as they start to deliver them....265's will be going on the 9's...rims are 17" dia. |

Have you considered stepping up to 16" or 17" wheels? If you have real Fuchs on there now you can probably sell them for enough to get some bigger ones. The 15 x 7's are in high demand.

So... Does this mean I can run 265/40/17's on a 8.5 in rim??
Or even a 275/40/17?? I could fill out the bontempi flares better with more tire... |
