So... this happened (listen careful starting about 30 seconds in):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkzY2qJieCQ The I drove it home and took it apart tonight to find this: ![]() Engine is a 3.0. Most of the time at the track is in 4th gear. The thing is, when I drained the trans 8 years ago, chunks came out. It was a POS box that lasted this long which is impressive. It wasn't until late last year that it would pop out of gear under light load. Under moderate to full load it was never a problem. What's weird is the sudden failure and that the synchros and sliders all look to be in decent shape. |

I assume you use the suggested gear lube and treat the gearbox as gently as possible. Perhaps attach an oil cooler and circulation system as part of the rebuild or plan on scheduled gearset replacements.

Whoops, missed this. Yes, correct lube, new gear oil after every season, smooth shifting. As mentioned earlier, it is/was a POS box that had chunks coming out of it 8 years ago. I'm surprised it lasted this long.
I doubt a cooler would help. There's no discoloration indicating overheating of the gears. I'll look into installing a temperature gauge for giggles. I assume you use the suggested gear lube and treat the gearbox as gently as possible. Perhaps attach an oil cooler and circulation system as part of the rebuild or plan on scheduled gearset replacements. |
